car stumbles and dies, is this the dreaded opti?

i took my car out tonight, i was driving steadily at 40 mph and my car stumbled. I drove for about another 30 seconds before turning down a side street, where i gave it alittle gas and it stumbled and hesitated and completely shut off ( check gauges came on)... it took several try's to restarted the car, also after restarting the SES light was on. I know the car needs wire and plugs badly, do you guys think these are symptoms of a failing opti, or coil?

It is very likely the plugs are fouled and the wires are worn out and maybe arcing. Get new plugs and wires before tearing the opti off.

Agreed, my Formula's opti is doomed I believe, and just to be sure I have replaced about all the other ignition just to be certain. Opti's are strange when they go. I have had where they run great until that one day that it takes a dump on you and will barely run or start, and then theres other times like in my Formula that I have been driving on the bad opti for about a year and a half now, and even though it runs like crap, and is continuing to get worse, it still starts and drives. (it recently has gotten really bad and is going to be replaced in the next few weeks) If you say you have bad plugs and wires possibly, I would definatly change them first. Its much cheeper, and if they even look like they might be bad, even with a new opti, your car still won't run well. If it still runs like junk after the new plugs and wires, and you are certain its not your coil, then I would buy the opti.

forget the wires , replace the opti or the ign module, wires and plugs will give more warning than that.

My car was only cutting out at high rpms when my opti was bad. What you described sounds EXACTLY like what my car was doing when the fuel pump decided to die. How many miles on the car?
