Car shuts off after idling

I have a stock 94 Camaro Z-28. I was letting the car idle and after about 5 minutes of running, it started the run rough like it is running or two or three cylinders, then the engine lights comes on and the car shuts off. I try to start the car again and it will turn over, but not catch fire and start. What couse cause this problem, or what kind of diagnostics can I do to find the problem.

Thanks for your help!!

You answered it yourself. That engine light came on for a reason. Have it scanned for codes and that will point you in the right direction. If you have questions about the codes, come back and let us know.

Before you start listening to Fatdog2, have it scanned for codes. Seems Fatdog2 was drunk last night (or so he claims in another post) and left a bunch of questionable posts.......

Is there a device I can buy to scan the car for codes? I do not want to chance driving the car to the auto part store for them to check the codes and it cuts off on me before I can make it there.

Thanks!!

You need an OBD-I scanner. AutoXray, Actron, etc. make them. Either OBD-I only, or more expensive models that will scan both OBD-I and OBD-II. Has to be a real scanner, and not the $30 Actron that is nothing more than a switch that shorts the ALDL pins - 93 is the last year that will work on (in spite of what it says on the box). Most auto parts stores only scan OBD-II.

There is also free scanning software available from TTS DataMaster and FreeScan.

I had something like this happening to my car, turned out to be the opti. Get it scanned for sure before wasting money on parts you don't need.
