Exclamation Car runs like crap w/ A/C is on

I NEED HELP!!!

i own a 94Z28 M6 and is pretty much stock. whenever i cut the ac on, the car immediately looses power, throtle response, and overall runs kinda choppy. when ac is off car runs fine (for stock).
just wondering if any of you have had this exact problem? the power loss is not catastrophic, but noticeable EVERY time.

Patient - Doc, my head hurts when I scratch it.
Doctor - Don't scratch it.
Something is messed up with your AC compresser - sounds like it's putting way too much resistance on the belt.
If you're not mechanically minded - take it in.

that's not a "problem" persay....it happens to ALL cars...the engine is naturally having to work harder when the AC is on so you lose power...

but at WOT, the AC shuts itself off so no "problem" there...

He said it runs choppy though - I can feel mine come on......but I don't loose power or throttle response.
Out of all the vehicles I've driven the Camaro is the most noticeable when the AC comes on. Most others there is no change.

maybe he needs to clean is IAC. When the compressor comes on its supposed to idle the car up a but. If it does not then you will naturally feel a sort of rumble from the lower RPMs.

I think a better question would be when you turn your A/C on what does your tach read?

Edit: being that you have an M6 it should read about 900 rpms plus or minus 50.

Hey Guys,

ok, i took the car in, and they said the altenator could be failing but i had the alt tested and they said its fine. actually, the rpms DROP intermitenly at idle. yes, i have always been able to 'feel' when the a/c is on, but the throtle response is noticeably sloppy. i just cant beleive that is normal. a/c should only kill about 5hp anyways.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: A/C just stop blowing cold. think its related?

hmmm...yes... You have a bad compressor, the bearings could be straining the engine, and the fact that it stopped today leads me to believe that you just blew the seals on your compressor. The same thing happened to me on a 2200 miles road trip this spring. Sorry Man.

you shouldn't notice any difference when a/c is on or off. it might rob only a couple of horses. i can't tell a difference at all in my car.
definatley another problem most likely what scooby said.

ok, i took the car in again, and they said that the front seal was leaking. could this for sure, be the reason that the car is running bad when the A/C is on? $200 for a new compressor is alot to not fix the problem.

thanks

Power loss in my car is noticible also when I have my A/C on. I posted this a little while back and most replies agreed that you can feel it when A/C is on.

I highly doubt that they are giving you a new compressor. They are probably just charging you for putting on the seal. If they are charging that much for the compressor than you just got the deal of a lifetime.

I was quoted by a long term friend of the family mechanic. His estimate was $700. That included the $635 oem from the dealership compressor and a little money for his time and effort. I priced it at the dealership and thats about what they go for. Autozone's is $300 and something. Good Luck.

For what its worth, that is definitely not what is causing your rough idle. It may be the compressor, but not the seal.

My car has done this ever since I bought it 4 years ago. It doesn't run "crappy" but it does feel like there is a miss or a stumbling at different RPMs (but it's not consistent depending on specific RPMs, it's random). Anyway, I posted about 2 years ago on the subject and got all kinds of sh@t like my compressor and/or alternator was bad. Well, 4 years later both the compressor and alternator are still kicking and the problem still persists. It really doesn't bother me too much now because I'm used to it. I think you should save your money and just live with it. I live in Florida and I run the AC 11 months out of the year. Unless your car is just unbelievably un-drivable, I wouldn't worry about it.

I totally agree. Put some money aside for it just in case. But don't stress about it. Just get it recharged if need be and wait to see what happens....
