Car runs bad when low on fuel

Just like the subject says. Why would the car run like crap when it is low on fuel? As soon as I fill it up it starts running a little better.
I get cranky too when I'm hungry but this is a little weird.

That link got a debate going i don't want to get into. My car gets better traction when it full so i keep it above 1/2 all the time.

is it constantly running rough or kind of spit and sputter....
trash in fuel tank comes to mind...
