Car failed NO on Emission test... need some help

I had my car e-teseted this morning, and she failed. It passed everything except for the NO ppm. The test is in Ontario, Canada. They ran it at idle and at 40 km/h.

40km/h
HC ppm Limit 55 Ran 36
CO% Limit 0.31 Ran 0.01
NO ppm Limit 408 Ran 652
PRM 1642
Dilution 14.51

Curb
HC ppm Limit 200 Ran 48
CO% Limit 1 Ran 0.00
NO ppm Limit 408 Ran 652
RPM 810
Dilution 14.30

Background info.... the car was tested 2 years ago, passed, but wasn't checked fo the NO ppm before... must be something new? I think I drove it for a week before I smoked a racoon with the car, messed up the front end and left it parked till I finally got it repainted last summer. I did a T56 conversion on the car a week ago, got a file from another board member, and went through all the tables with Tuner Cat. Everything was very close if not the same. I also made sure the speedometer was reading right on the money in case anything was related to that. The car has had new spark plugs put in it a few years ago, but have less than 3000 kms on it. That's all the car has had done to it emissions wise.

If anyone has some info or things to check, I would appreciate it. The kid running the test told me to replace the EGR, I want to be sure before blindly throwing money at her. I've done some reading and going to check the IAT, MAF, etc to make sure they're clean.

EGR is what lowers NO(NOx), so look into the EGR system

make sure the vac lines are on, make sure there is vacuum to the soleniod, apply vacuum to the EGR when running to see if the engine stumbles, ect.

Yeah, I was looking into that as well. I have the GM manual so I am starting to check out the section on that.

I have for the moment tried the EGR by reaching back and pressing the diaphram and the engine does stuble. I am going to have to look into getting a vacuum guage to finish testing that out.

Re: Car failed NO on Emission test... need some help

I spent some time tonight going through the EGR system.

I got the car to stumble when I applied vacuum to the EGR. I put it back together and tried the solenoid via a spare weather pac connector and it worked.

I then grounded pin 6 on the DLC and put the car into the field/service mode and I got 12V to the connector on the car. As far as I can tell then, everything is working properly and there must be something from the PCM not being satisfied to enable it.... I guess it's over to the Computer section for some help!?

If anyone has some info on what paramaters enable this, please post! Thanks

I did also check my TPS and I got between .5 and 4.6V for my 0-100%

Stock exhaust? I had the same problem and also live in Ontario. With longtube headers theres not enough back pressure for the valve to function. If theres been more timing added in the new program that will also raise NoX as will higher running temps. Colder weather may help. Once I got the valve to function it dropped the Nox to 200. PM for the info.

For the benefit of others...

The exhaust isn't stock. It's got some kind of a cat back system on it, and it has 4" stainless tips on it. The manifolds are still on it, and the CAT is in place, and all O2 sensors are connected.... I have headers to go on after the test though

I did have a thought tonight though.... I haven't conneted up the CAGS on the tranny. Would that be tied into the EGR? The computer is setting a code for that

NOx is caused by high combustion chamber temperatures, and/or a lean mixture. Your HC and CO are very low, indicating it may possibly be running a little lean. What is your coolant temp running?

I doubt the skip shift (CAGS) would contribute to the problem in any way.

I just pulled up my Datamaster flie up, and in a 10 minute drive, I had a max temp of about 109 degrees celcius and and a low of about 93.

I can email you this file if you'd like to look at it... Thanks

my car BOMBED NOx and i thought it was my EGR...turned out my cat was clogged, i could tell it was when i took off my catback and could see the honeycomb hanging out. if you have time id take off the first pipe of the catback and look in the cat see what it looks like. i ended up just gutting mine and am going to register it in WV where there are no emissions just inspection

Re: Car failed NO on Emission test... need some help

I did find a solution to my EGR problem. When I did the A4 to M6 conversion, I wired up two wires from the old auto shifter that enables the hatch to work. The thing with those wires is that they also tell the computer which gear the car is in. By connecting them together, the car thinks the car is in neutral or park and doesn't call for the EGR signal, if left open (not grounded) the computer believes the car is in gear and calls for the EGR when necessary.

I am picking up a vacuum guage tonight just to verify that the valve gets vacuum to open the valve tonight, and she's off to get e-tested!

lol with my setup, HOOKER LTs, all emission stuff off/disabled, no cats. You can just smell the car at idle and know it wont pass.

Curb
HC ppm Limit 200 Ran 19
CO% Limit 1 Ran 0.00
