While im driving, my car will just cut out and die, when it dies, all the warning lights flicker on and off, and the speedos bounce around. I can pull over usuallty and turn off the car and turn it back on. And then it runs and drives fine. Well thats at least how i got it to a mechanic. Just seeing what all yo guys think it is?

 

oh ya, besides when it decides to start to die out, it runs and drives great.

But guesses are,

• Bad gas?
• Stalled the M6 thinking you were driving the A4?
• anything...

 

Just a hunch, but it sounds like an electrical problem to me. Check your battery ground, your alternator ground, and keep an eye out for other symptoms.

 

Ignition module is a guess...

Check fuel pressure as well when it's doing it.

The answer is the ignition switch. When they start to fail, the car can run and drive perfect and then suddenly die. Sometimes the car will restart, sometimes it won't do anything. What leads me to the ignition switch is that all the power to the gauge cluster runs through the ignition switch. If you notice your gauges doing whacky things, the car randomly dies, sometimes restarts, sometimes won't turn over at all, replace the ignition switch. It is located on the topside of the steering column about 2/3 of the way down the column. You will need to remove the lower dash cover and drop the steering column down to access the switch. The cost is roughly $25.

 

Another vote for the ignition switch.

 

sorry it took so long to get back to ya, but ya its the A4, does what you guys are saying, it suddenly dies, sometimes it runs great, sometimes when it dies, it starts right up, sometimes it doesnt, all the lights flicker, and the speedos bounce around. sometimes when it dies, and you try to start it, its like it has a dead batterie, then it almost starts but cuts out, then it might start up. Always diffent. thanks for all the input

 

Check your battery cables and your grounds on the front of the block and the padd side just below the head in the middle of the block.

 

thanks for all the help, just to let you know it was a bad ground! The worst thing is figure it out after i did the beotch of a job to put in that ignition switch!, but the ground was touching from a mystery washer to the power on the part near the battery that has a bunch of grounds and a power under a cover. Dont know why it was there, must of been something with the old owner ( just bought the car) but ya its 100% the problem. Figured it out by waiting for it to die completely and opened the hood and shook wires till lights came on. agian thanks for all your help
