car dies after tb install
car dies after tb install
I just finished installing a bbk throttle body and went out to test drive it. Car drove fine through my neighborhood, but when i opened it up on a straight, and my ses light came on. I am assuming it was my throttle postition sensor, and keep driving. After about thirsty or so minutes of semi rough driving I park the car. I fiddle with the tps and the go for another test drive, I get about a mile and the idle drops to 500 and then the car dies. I start it up but it will not idle without throttle input. Could the new throttle body have fried the tps or does an aftermarket tb come with a new tps. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Make sure your elbow connection to the tb hasn't slipped off at the bottom. The standard elbow is pretty flimsy and is hard to even get on the throttle body without folding under. Many people get the 1LE elbow from GM because it is thicker and doesn't have the silencer pipe Egyptian chin looking thing on it. If there are any vacuum leaks in the intake between the maf and tb, the car will not run right.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Did you adjust the idle stop screw to get the correct idle speed and correct IAC counts?
Did you then check the TPS sensor for the correct voltage range from full closed to full open, with a smooth transition in between?
Are you sure the TPS sensor is correctly indexed to the "flats" on the end of the throttle shaft? (a stock sensor should work fine with the BBK, if installed correctly).
Are you sure the gasket for the TB-to-intake is on correct? Also the gasket for the TB-to-coolant/IAC plate?
On the coolant/IAC plate, are you sure none of the screws bottomed out before clamping the plate tight to the TB?
Did you allow any water to drip out of the TB/hoses and get the Opti wet?
Did you put the foam plug in to seal the TPS to the TB shaft?
Did you connect ALL the items you may have disconnected when you did the install:
-TPS
-IAT
-IAC
-MAF
-valve cover vent line
-EEC purge solenoid vacuum connection?
Is you inlet elbow torn or folded under?

I double checked all my connections and they were all good, i think i have it down to a tps in need of recalibration. When i was putting on the tps, the blades did not line up so i had to twist it and unless i can adjust the tps manually, i am not sure how to work on it. would a hypertech programmer allow me to read the tps and iac and all those other goodies? If anyone could give me steps to work on my tps i would bet money on the tps being my source of problems, the ses light would only come on at about 4500rpms, i figure the tps went really far out of range and freaked the computer out, i appreciate the input. sorry it takes me time to reply, in and outta the house alot.
