Car die, what do you think the damage is?

Ok, here's the story. I was at the track and I was almost at the finish line when the car shut off at 6000 RPM's. First I checked if I had spark and I did not. Then I checked if I had power to the coil and I did. Then I checked hole number 3 if I had compression, and no I did not. So my guess is my timing chain went. What do you guys think?

yeah, its possible, because if you snapped a timing chain your valves would be stuck open (some anyways) and even when turning the crank, the air would just blow right out of the exhaust manifold, but why would that cost you your spark? those sound like 2 totally different problems you have there..... possible ignition module failure as well? and just cuz you have power to the coil, doesnt mean your getting power to the distributor.... sheared/disconnected/broken/internally damaged ignition wire from the coil to the distributor can cause you not to get spark either.... but as for the compression? assuming you snapped a timing chain, yeah u may not get compression out of 1 or more cyls, but i doubt it would have an effect on your spark..... i mean to my knowledge, step 1 of trouble shooting a failure to start is to see if the ignition is working properly.... and then if it is, you go deeper, into the fuel system, and possibly even as far as where you did, and run a compression test.... now you have one dead cylinder that you know of, check that one again, run the compression test on cyl 1 at TDC and check to make sure the guage is working correctly, i doubt cylinders 1 and 3 would be out due to a timing chain problem....... considering they are right next to eachother, and the firing order on your car is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 so if 3 was in its exhaust stroke, 1 would probably be halfway through its power stroke.... just my 2 pennies.... just putting common sense on the same plate as what real world experience i have had.... good luck!

ZeeDub:

The distributor is driven by the cam sprocket. If the chain snaps, nothing turns the distributor, therefore he has no spark. Typical SBC.

There's a good chance you have a few bent valves/pushrods, eyebrowed pistons, especially if it snapped at 6k rpm. Pull the timing cover, and go from there. If it did snap (which it almost 100% sounds like it did), then start pulling the heads.

Good luck.

lol it was a long day, and i was tired, i overlooked that part so yeah, now that i think about it, no spark, and no compression, you MUST have snapped a chain....and yes... if you did that? you may as well buy yourself a new motor... cuz chances are your heads are more than likely toasted.... as well as your pistons, and maybe even the connecting rods (unlikely, but weirder **** has happened) but cross that bridge when you come to it, dismantle the timing cover, and check it out.... or... someone correct me if im wrong, could you not take the water pump off and check for the turning of the water pump shaft with the crankshaft? or would that not work? by my logic, i would think you could just do that..... someone clarify on this....
