car is backfiring on my right bank!

Well its about 60 degrees today, I know I have a problem with my right side being rich and my left side being lean but today it started doing some nasty backfiring, enough that I dont want to keep the car running. Every 2 or so seconds a loud bang and a metallic sound (exhaust hitting crossmember i think) occurs. Smoke will then rise from the passanger side header... Did I or will I ruin something if I run it?? It does NOT sound pretty at all...

check your plugs. Maybe one of your plugs is not firing, or perhaps the spark plug wire could cause that as well.

Is it safe to make the minimum BLM's around 118 and max around 138 just to get it to stop backfiring so I can work on it?

What is common to one bank and not the other. Well the fuel rail splits to each side. Could one side be plugged or restricted? Could the rich side be trying to compensate for the lean side?

Don't change anything. Don't run it long. Only start it up to see if you fixed the problem.

I would go through the entire fuel system from top to bottom. And test it again.
