Car almost cuts off with new cam!

I just installed the xe 224/230 cam today. It sounds great! I know that I still need to get my computer tuned and this may solve the following problem........ At idle the rpm's drop below a 1000 and almost cuts off, then it stabilizes and everything is fine. Im thinking its because I need proper tuning but is there anything else that could cause this?

Have a scanner? Your IAC may not be able to keep up with the cam not allowing in enough air. You could try and crack the throttle blades a tad and see what that does.

Well my buddy has the same cam in his car with stock heads and it runs fine now. After tuning that is. The guy that is tuning it said when he did my buddies he had to give it more fuel and do all the timing stuff. It stumbles pretty bad down low. Hope the tuning helps.

Your valves MAY be set too tight. A car not being able to idle after a cam swap sometimes is because of the lash set too tight. Often the car will idle bad , (if at all), and will also run bad when the valves are too tight. You could try setting the lash again.

When you say valves do you mean the springs or covers? The springs were torqued to the req. specs.

See, I wast the one that did all that! I basically helped with the install but had no part in the major stuff. I just took alot of stuff off and helped reassemble stuff. The other guy did the cam, springs,rr's, pushrods, etc, all the serious stuff. All this is nothing new to him. He has a TA with a 383 stroker in it that he built himself. He does this stuff all the time so I know that he knows what hes doing. I just wasnt sure about your last remark.

Fair enough.

When adjusting the valves, you are actually adjusting the nut on top of your roller rockers. You need to tighten them in a specific sequence, turn engine over and adjust the other 1/2, and also they aren't torqued, but you need to find the zero lash point (no slack in push rod), then go 1/4 turn past. If he went 3/4 or something of the like, you will have problems.

Im sure everything was done right. Like I said this is far from his first time doing this stuff.

What kinda problems could I have if it had been done wrong by him or someone else?
