Can't get the tranny back in!
I just dropped the new motor in and bolted up the McLeod and the tranny will not go back in. I used the alignment tool through out the install checked all clearances, and torqued it to spec. It get about a 1/4" away from the belhousing and stops and will not go any further. The pilot bushing is installed correctly also. Does anyone else have this problem with the ST?
Are you sure you have the alignment dowels, between the tranny and the bell housing in the proper position? Are you sure you have the tranny level with the engine? If it isn't exactly in a straight line, the front of the input shaft will not slip into the pilot bearing? You have the clutch fork off the ball?
I tried and tried. I put a new pilot bushing in. It's in all the way. And it is still about an 1/8th of an inch off. The bolt holes don't quite match up. I just have the front of the car in the air. Would it make a difference if the car was level? I've had a few of my friends who are very familar with these trannys and we're at a loss.
Yeah i had that same problem. Couldn't figure out what it was. But i also used to bolts to pull the tranny in. I don't know if that messed anything up. But i do know 5,000 miles later i'm putting in a new clutch. Also tranny made a lot of noises while driveing it. Hopefully when i do it this weekend i won't run into the same issue. And hopefully i didn't ruin my input shaft.
Well i just did another clutch install yesterday. I'm using the mcleod single disc. I ran into the exact same problem as you are. Nothing i did could get it go that last tiny bit. I took of the pp and disc 5 times to get make sure it was lined up and it still woudn't go. The 2 little tabs on the side of the tranny wouldn't go into the holes. Finally after trying for about 5 hr's. I finally got it close enough that i felt comfortable about pulling it together with the bolts again. But all my bolts were lined up. I'm gonna put the fluid in it tonight and see how it goes. I'll let you know. I hope to god that it is correct because if it isn't then i think that i'm gonna just sell the car and get a different car. I really don't feel like droping the tranny and messing with it for another 14hrs. Nor do i have the time. Good luck with yours though.
I'm tryin like he!! to get it finished by then. It's looking grim though with the tranny. If I can get it in I'll try to bring it down there. Everything else is pretty much done. I'd like to put the cryo'd rear end to the test.
I had the same problem as you installing my S/T. It was a 1/4" from going in. I finally put in all the bolts and snugged them up but didn't pull up tranny with them, I then hooked up slave and pressed in clutch and it popped in another 1/8" and then pulled it up with bolts. I have about 2000 miles on it and it works perfect, I think because of the thickness of the twin disk it's more difficult to have everything lined up, Thats what depressing the clutch pedal helps with. Good Luck, I know how frustrating it is
