Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
I have a 94 z28 lt1 and I have been fighting with this thing for 2 weeks now.
I can't get this harmonic balancer off or whatever you would call it. I found out that it comes off in 2 parts. One takes the 3 jaw puller and the other takes the harmonic balancer puller. Well I got the first one off, but it's this second part that won't budge!
I had sprayed liquid wrench on it and let it sit for 2 days. I attached the first part of the pulley and tried to use the 3 jaw puller, I tried the harmonic balancer puller, I tried beating the hell out of it with a mallet, I tried heating it up the best I could with my little micro torch then beating the hell out of it. I have yet to get this thing to even show me a sign! Hell I tried banging on It with tension from the harmonic balancer puller on it right after heating it up! Is there something I am doing wrong or is there someone who has any other ideas?
I have broken 3 craftsmen ratchets, and now my last one I had available just broke which ended up being a walmart one, which surprisingly held more torque than the craftsman before breaking.
For leverage I have used my handle from my engine lift + handle from my jack on top of that. Bent the bolts to both pullers, and this thing still isn't even budging. I have the harmonic balancer puller lined up as straight as I can inside of it. What else can I really do?

Re: Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
Are you sure the center pin of the puller is small enough to fit through the hole in the crank hub? Have seen several people make that mistake. It helps to slide a ratchet extension in the crank bolt hole, and have the center pin of puller push on that.
Re: Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
I use an old head bolt with the threads ground off to slip in the crank hub bolt hole and push off of that with a balancer puller. A ratchet is not going to hold up to the torque needed to get it loose. Use a break over bar (1/2" or larger) and extension handle as needed.
Re: Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
there are some "homemade" puller options some do using a piece of all thread, washers, nut, etc. a search should turn up something
I have always used the kent Moore LT1 specific puller/installer but that is only because a friend has one. They ain't cheap but pretty "plug & play" to use.
this one "looks" like it works well but have never used it before.
ProformParts.com - 66514, HARMONIC BALANCER INSTALLER / PULLER
I see them on ebay new for around $70

Re: Can't get this damn Balancer/crank pulley off!!!!
i used the harmonic balancer removal tool at sears for 20 bucks. then screwed that into the crank hub wholes with different bolts that i bought from napa.
then used a tiny piece not much bigger then a 1/2 drive extension that i cut from a sae grade 8 threaded rod that was smaller then the hole of the crank hub bolt so i didnt mess any threads up.
For installation it was so much easier and i purchased a threaded rod from mc master McMaster-Carr
then about 6 washers ranging from 7/16 to 3/4 sae grade 8 no bending cheap stuff.
then two 7/16 20 threaded nuts and bang cut the rod in half screwed on my nuts put the washers up then places the hub on the rod and bottomed in out in the crank hub. lots of turns with a 7/16 wrench on the nut to turn the hub down and my buddy holding the rod so it didnt try and move!
