can't get the car to cool off

This thing rises to just next to the red on the temp gauge. I also get a low coolant light on the dash all the time which I know is false since I keep it filled and burped...

I even installed a 160 Hypertech T-stat today and it made no difference over the 180 I had in there

HELP!

Th only way I can cool it down is to turn on the defroster which forces both fans to come on. But with the single fan that comes at as normal, it doesn't cool down.

Average driving temp is around 210 even with the new T-stat

Anyone?

The low coolant light is a typical problem with these cars. Most likely a bad sensor (in the radiator, just below the fill cap).

What you are describing sounds normal to me. Regardless of thermo temp, the engine will only cool when the fans are on or the vehicle is moving fast enough to push air through the radiator. Without the A/C compressor on, the stock programming will not enable the fans until 226 degrees! This was done to help with emissions. The only way to cool the car below this is by turning on the A/C (or defrost), a manual fan switch, hypertech, LT1_Edit/Tunercat, or a mailorder tune. These cars run hot with stock programming!

Or a Jet fan switch.
