Cant drop the tank for new Walbro

Cant drop the tank for new Walbro

My friend has a 96 T/a with a bad fuel pump. i got him a new walbro 255 at ramchargers on sat, and we tried putting it in on yesterday. I read that you have to take the plastic piece off the fuel filler tube, and then unscrew the filler tube from the tank? well we took the exhaust, panhard rod and brace, exhaust shields, and got the tank loose fromt the car. now we cant get the tank off cause theres no wy to unscrew the fiuller tube. the only thing i can see is to maybe take the entire rear axle off and the maybe thers will be enough room to drop the tank. he had gotten into a really bad rear end accident, and i think the tank may not be original. its a metal tank. need help. i dont want to cut the tube off, i think that will be trouble, and i dont want to ruin the tank. any suggestions would be appreciated.

If its an aftermarket tank and its attached in a dfferent way it might be better to cut an access panel in the hatch and remove the fuel pump from inside the car.

Im pretty sure that you have to take the rearend off to drop the tank...

Thats what i was thinking, drop the whole rear, but what a pain. hope my ls1(no accidents) is easier than this...but any other thoughts are welcomed. i dont think he wants to cut anything in the car...

Well how big of a panel should you make? and where exactly should it be?

You have to raise the cars' rear about 2', then yo must drop the rear end, no need to remove it completely from under the car, just drop it to the ground. The steel tank is an original piece, only LS1 cars have the plastic. When lowering the tank you must slightly bend the filler tube by pulling the tank down from the opesite side of the tube then pull the tank out (to the right side of the car) until it hits the frame, pull it again down to bend the tube and to the righ. You might need to do this thing 3-4 time untill the tank can be taken out.
After fixing the tank back up you can bend the tube back to it original location.
That's how I did mine, and a friend IROC which is almost the same.

thanks. this sounds a bit more reasonable. im sure we could cut it, but i dont think hed want to do it liek that. and we already have the tank hanging there(on a jack), so it shouldnt be too hard. so take the rear off and bend it...sounds good.

I have an access hole. It is covered and hinged, and the carpet covers it anyway. Since I have justput in my fifth fuel pump it was a very good thing to do.

I had the same problem with mine. Aftering completely dropping the rear, cutting the exhaust and everything I could think I could not get the tank out. I finally got it into a position where I could reach in there and pull the pump out. There was little room and when I was putting it back in I messed up my fuel gauge sending unit cause it was so tight in there. Later I had to change the pump again so I just cut the access panel.

I believe in doing things the proper way but that tank was not coming out without breaking the neck so I was basically forced to cut the access panel. I wish I didn't do it but I had no choice.

Thanks CamaroSSGuy2, for the great site!

When I put my pump in thats exactly what I will do, sounds like pulling the tank is a major pain in the a$$ and its too easy for a first time person to screw too many things up.
