Can this warp heads?

I bought an engine out of a 96 Z28 that was in a fire, do you think the fire could get hot enough to warp the heads?

A couple of springs on the drivers side got hot enough to lose sping pressure between the seat and the retainer. You can physically take the spring and turn it on its seat because there is no pressure.

Thanks
Travis

I'd say so.

Re: Can this warp heads?

After an engine has been in a fire ya can't trust anything to be within spect.
Ya will have to CHECK EVERYTHING to make sure it all fits like it's supposed to.
The heat treat on the block and heads is destroyed also. So the parts may not stay together as they are supposed too fit wise.

This too depends on how big the fire was and weather it was centered around the engine. Me personally I would not use anything but the crank, rods and pistons presuming the pan didn't melt off of it.

Re: Can this warp heads?

I don't believe the fire was centered around the engine. The paint on the valve covers was burnt off but the oil pan was fine. I would say the fire became intense under the hood when the fuel line burst.

I'm going to have the heads reworked I just didn't know how much a head can be warped from heat before its no good.

Here's a little story on the engine.....A couple of guys caught the car on fire after they shot the owner and threw him the hatch Kinda wierd I don't know If I want it in my car or not.....lol

Oh hell yeah, a car with a story.

I'd build something new under the hood
Nice 355 Shortblocks can be had for ~$2500-3000
Toss on some nice ported heads and custom cam and enjoy

At least have the block and frame inspected and just replace the heads.
I wouldn't trust anything that's been under that kind of heat.
Sometimes I swear you could fart and warp LT1 heads.

Re: Can this warp heads?

I've already bought the engine.....I got a pretty good deal on it.

I was just going to do a cheap rebuild on this on just to get it going. I have the orignal LT1 that came out of my car that I'm going to build....the one out of the burnt Z is just for the summer/fall race season.
