Is A $600 Dyno Worth It Compared To Mail Order Tunes(advanced Techs Please Chime In)
what do you guys think is it worth the money to do a dyno to correct my car running rich + hesitation/backfire from 1000-2000rpm (seems like not enough vacuum because of the cam), i have a mail order tune already from pcmforless but dont think this car can can be fixed unless someone physically looks at it thanks heres my log file if anyone is interested on what they think it is

From what I can tell, it looks like you need to add some timing at idle to try and get your MAP to read lower. You're vacuum looks horrible. Are you sure you don't have a vacuum leak somewhere?

If you and your tuner of choice have enough time and patience you can do it. Sometimes they just get too busy to keep redoing tunes for free or for $50 less their shipping cost for sending it back to you, as opposed to new tunes that they make more money on. I have the same problem as you, that is cam surge in the lower RPM's because of too much timing (I think). Point is that it gets expensive, time consuming and sometimes frustrating for boths parties if you keep having to send back tunes to get it just right. If it is that big a deal then get a dyno tune, I am

yea its the most annoying thing ever i know my KPA is very high but i think its due to the size of the cam which i cant reveal ....23x 23x 10X LSA and i only get the backfire out of the intake from 1000rpm to 2000rpm example... ill be driving no matter half throttle or WOT itll seemslike its not enough air comming in (but i dont know) then itll pop out of the intake or backfire whatever you wanna call it but only between that rpm range,if im above 2000rpm im alright, i already went over my valve adjustment twice and got them to zero lash then a 1/16 turn so that the pushrod can spin freely, and everything on the car is new exept for the FPR its still the stock one but i do know that the car is running extremely rich thanks to freds input hes had alot of patients with me and hopefully he chimes in for a finally time id appriciate all the help everyones giving before i throw another 600 bucks, but hey im already in 12,000 bucks right?

Are you positive you don't have a vacuum leak? My MAP reads too high (~.7 bar), but when I give it some throttle, it builds vacuum really well. And, my cam is bigger than yours. There is something else wrong. That's just my .02. If there is something wrong, you have to fix it first or the dyno tune will be a waste of money.

hmm whats a sure way to check for a vacuum leak i wanna leave this as a last resort because i really dont want to go in there and start taking stuff apart if i dont have to, you know what i mean?

Start the car and let it idle. Pop the hood and spray some starting fluid around the intake and see if the car revs up. If it does, then you have a vacuum leak. There are other methods, but that will work fine.

I've got a 236/248 111 LSA cam and I'm getting a dyno tune. I've been working on this car for a year and a half and simply do not have the patience left to go back and forth with a mail order tune.
For what it's worth I did purchase a tune from Madwolf, his customer service has been fine and he has been willing to look at my datalogs. I just want the peace of mind of dropping this car off, and picking it up running as it should.

Most tuners who work on a dyno charge by the hour. Some of the people who do it as kind of a hobby may quote a low, fixed price though. A flat $600 fee is strange. Most cars that run really bad turn out to have some kind of mechanical or electrical problem that cannot be corrected by a tune. That's one huge advantage of a skilled tuner working on your car, as opposed to mail order. If they have the skill, experience, and equipment they can figure out what is actually going on, something nearly impossible from a distance.
That said, if the car does not have issues, I have been very impressed by what the goood mail orders guys can do. But that's a big if.
BTW: there are some combos that simply cannot be tuned to run like a stocker.
