Can my mechanic do this?

OK (weather permitting) I'm dropping off my car at the mechanics on Monday to get the heads off. However, on the driver side, there's a spot where the headers are welded. It's hard to explain where they're welded, but I needed it welded because exhaust was escaping and no gasket could fix it. Anyways if worse comes to worse should I have him just cut it in the same place (or different place) and weld it again? Would that cost me any HP?

You had your headers welded on ? You may never get them off again and still retain any sealing properties where the welds were (assuming you can get them off at all). Surely there had to be other option than welding.

you mean you have the header welded to the head? - I would buy different headers before doing that

wow these guys are right, trying to break or cut through a weld is tough work, welds are made to be stronger than the metal they are attached to. You may have some problems removing the two. Please explain this further, did you weld it yourself, or did a shop do this?

breaking a weld is very hard work. I'm surprised if the shop did it, is it a shop that specializes in fbodies???

I doubt the headers are welded to the head?
steel doesn't 'weld' to aluminum[brazed maybe?]

Thats my vote too, or the guy that did the weld shouldn't be working on cars he should be professional welder making bank.

NO, def. not welded to the head....let's clear that up..........

When I was installing the headers I had to use sand paper to get a "U" type tube into the headers....and I guess me and my buddy went a little too far and made it so exhaust was getting out. My mechanic said that the only way to fix it was have it welded, so I did....If I remember it right it goes like this.......

Headers go to this U type tube. The left side of the tube is what connects from the left (driver side) headers....the right side connects to the right (passenger) side headers...the back side gets welded to the cat. The weld that my mechanic made was on the right side.

If he can't get the headers off because of the weld what should I do? Can he wcut a different part and weld it back, without losing any HP?

I think you're talking about your Y-pipe. He should be able to just cut if off, and then weld it back together. If not just get a new one, or fabricate one.
