Can Lt1 flywheels be turned

I am putting a new clutch in my car 95/M6
I wanted to know if these flywheels can be
turned?? I see they are alot different from
the GEN-1 style. I want to make sure I have
a true flat surface with the new clutch.

Re: Can Lt1 flywheels be turned

From reading many posts, its sounds like it can be hit or miss. I had the stock flywheel turned once with no issues.

I had mine turned twice. The scond time I used a shim just to be on the safe side.

What did you have to use a shim for
Is there any way to tell if mine has been turned before.
I can't afford to have any problems. and need to do it
right the first time.

So, if mine has not been turned before, I should be alright???

not to sound dumb, but isnt the flywheel only able to go one way?

or you talking about resurfaced?

If you mean resurfacing, I resurfaced mine about two time. I don't think it's a good idea to resurface it to many times.

Shimming the flywheel to make up for material lost is useless.
Think about it, the pressure plate bolted to the surface does not care if material has been removed. The only thing that slightly changes is the fork angle but the hydraulics make up for it. Plus you will have less thread hollding the flywheel to the crank, not good.

Turning, resurfacing same damn thing. Just dont try it with a belt sander

The shim was to bring the surface back close to the stock location. I had it turned twice @ .010 and had a .025 thick shim.

So what would be out of spec if the shim is ommitted. Again the PP simply bolts to the flat surface of the flywheel. In no way is the PP deminsions, clamping force, alignment altered.
When you dont have self adjusting clutch mechanisms then shims become important. Almost all cars have a self adjusting mechanism so shims are useless and become a liability if overused. I prefer as much tread in the crank as possible.
Someone correct me if im wrong here.

Sorry to hijack, but about how much does it cost to have the flywheel turned?

Re: Can Lt1 flywheels be turned

use thread locker on the bolts, IF you don't have and adjsutable Hydraulic system.. I'E. Mcleod or Ram... you should use the shims... when a flywheel is cut it's height changes, and this causes problems for the engaging and disengaging of the stock hydraulic system. Using shims puts the flywheel back to the original height, that the stock hydraulic system is set up to. Remember you have 6 bolts on the Flywheel, a few 1000ths isn;t going to hurt. Shims have been in use for decades.

Turning a flywhell can range from 20-35 bucks or so.
