Can I use butt connectors on the wires to the temp sensor and be ok?

Today I was under my camaro pulling the starter and I noticed of of the wires goin to the temp sending unit (I assume that's what it is, goes into the water pump or just below it?) had a section with exposed wire. I cut out the inch of bad wire and I was going to reconnect it with butt connectors but my dad says that might throw off the signal since sensors read in ohms, and that I should ask first. Is it ok or is there some other way to repair it that I should do instead?

dont know if it is proper, but i have used butt connectors on the wires to that sensor before. the PCM temp readings were exactly the same to the degree as they always were before i did it (i always scan/logged when i drove that car)

its only like 15-20 dollars at a dealer.......if you got the money I would replace it, if not...then try it and if it doesnt work out, then at least you know it doesnt cost much to replace.

Well the thing is the lead goes into the harness. I didn't cut it at the sensor, but about half way between where the wires go into the harness and the sensor. Buying a new sensor wouldn't help me, I don't think.

If you use a good connector and crimp it properly, you should be ok. My personal preference is to slide a little heat shrink tubing over one end of the wire, then solder the wires together. Then slide the heat shrink tubing over the splice and shrink it down.
