While you might not be technically legal, you can pass emissions with LT's and cats. The inspection techs are not going to crawl under your car and check the cat placement. He'll, I doubt 95% of them even know what the stock cat configuration is on your car. Dont tell'm the cats were moved and they'll never know. Most techs dont give a damn anyway, as long as you can still pass that sniffer.

Basically, if you dont buy LT's that already have provisions for the smog lines and O2 sensors, you'll need to weld in bungs to the header tubes/collectors and extend a few lines and hoses. There's many different configurations that will work.

Harris county TX has the dyno emmissions testing as well, that are modeled after CA. Do the testing facilities in CA actually put the cars on a lift and have diagrams of the stock cat placement for different year model cars, which they actively use for placement verification? What exactly are the carb numbers and do the inspection techs physically check every part? Couldnt you find a shop to overlook these minor (in my opinion) transgressions for an extra $20 or so, as long as the car passes tailpipe.

Not trying to be a smartass, but I'd really like to know. Maybe our testing here is not as close to CA as I thought...

How stupid are the smog techs in your area? Are they half way blind perhaps?

They are not CARB certified and technically they are not legal, that is just how things are in CA. However there have been shorties not CARB certified passed, with people just saying they are another header, and providing a CARB EO number.

With the HP that shorties are making I think the long tube debate, and cost, is just not worth it.

All SLP headers for LT1 are CARB EO certified, you can find the number on the web. For LS1s however the long tubes are not, but for LT1s you are legal, but no there are no numbers ON the header themselves.

No longtube header is California smog legal. The FLP ones have the fittings that smog legal shorties have but don't have a carb number. There's hundreds of smog shops in the Bay Area alone and almost none of them do a visual so they won't care. I was really worried about this back when I got my headers so I went with shorties. In hindsight I should have gone with longtubes.

If you are smart, you won't take a chance with LTs or non-carb headers. Sure you might get away with it, but what if you don't?

You can't exactly hide LTs unless the inspector is both blind and deaf. JMHO

You guys are starting to make it sound like someone will get in big trouble if a smog tech saw LTs and didn't pass them. There's always another shop that will

Exclamation

What everyone should be worried about here in Cali is that one CHP or PD officer that is bored and 'on the ball'. Yes, there are some officers that know what long tubes are.

Happened to a coworker of mine that had a 95 Z28.

A CHP officer was at a light, must have seen the LTs light up in his headlights as the Z28 passed.. Pulled him over.

Nice little fine... Had to swap the stock manifolds back on and show up for inspection.

Anyone feel like going through that?

The chances of an officer spotting them and pulling you over is a real longshot. I'm amazed your buddy got pulled over for that. Don't the FLP header sit high enough that you really can't notice them?

The idea of headers "lighting up" is bogus....anyways, I don't know if anyone has heard, but Georgia has become somewhat of a smog-**** state. Not only is everything hooked to a sniffer, but they also will fail you for a simple trouble code in the ECU now. I'm still not sure about how I'm going to pass my '96 off with OBDI.
