Can the air injection be plugged?

Can the air injection be plugged?

I just finished headers, Ypipe, plugs, etc. It's still on jackstands (waiting on my wheels to be done), so i fired up the motor... idles way better than before. If i give it a small rev, it gives a small backfire on decel. My headers have the EGR and AIR fittings for stupid yearly emmisions, so my question is- Can i put a plug in the rubber AIR lines going into the header to keep it out of the exhaust without pulling the whole AIR system? I've done it on motorcycles, but the ECM doesn't moniter AIR, its all mechanical. Then again, maybe I just need a PCMtuneforless to richen up the mixture??

The AIR system only runs on cold start-up and won't have any effect on the PCM, as the O2s aren't even used at that time.

If you have a fully functional AIR injection system and just plug the headers, I'm sure the AIR pump will be very angry. Why don't you just remove the system entirely? It's 3 bolts, a few pipes/hoses, and cap off the inlet from the intake and plug the headers. As long as there's a good fuse in the system it won't set an SES light.

Maybe I'll just do that. Then when its time for emissions again, just put it back in. How much time does it take to remove?? If its anything like installing the plugs or headers, i'll just leave it in.

If you remove the AIR pump, you mave to keep a good fuse in the circuit, or you will have a code and an SES light (93-95). In the OBD-II cars (96-97) the PCM DOES monitor the AIR system using the O2 sensors, and will set codes for lack of air flow to the exhaust. The PCM diagnostic simply waits for the O2 sensors to warm up, and turns on the pump to make sure the sensors pick up pthe excess air in the exhuast.
