Knock retard does not set a code or cause an SES light. Its generally not due to an engine problem, its due to using the wrong fuel, in most instances. You need a scanner (not a code puller) to monitor knock retard.
If, on the other hand, your knock sensor or wiring is faulty, it will set a code, you will get an SES light, and the PCM will respond by applying knock retard ranging up to 15 degrees, depending on engine operating conditions.
