Can a 3rd gen rear fit a 4th gen?
While all the attachment points are the same, the 3rd Gen rear axle assembly is a full 3" narrower than the 4th Gen. You will probably have a problem with the disc brake caliper mounts.
I just put a 3rd gen 9" 4.11 on mine,it came with 3rd gen brakes and took a little adapting but went on pretty well.
You will need wheels with 4.5 backspacing instead of the 6" we have with the stock wheels.
I had spacers made to run my stock wheels on the street and use GTA wheels at the track without the spacers.
My 9" came with 3" studs which is what allows me to do this.

You can run it. You just need spacers. I've got a pair of 2 1/4" spacers and a pair of 1 1/4" spacers. Sorry I don't have pics, but they are just like these, only used. http://www.skulte.com/adapters.html
If your interested I'll sell either pair. I no longer need them. Let me know.
