camaro z28 95/96 non start

Hi from the UK,

I have a customer imported Camaro Z28 V8 1995/96 come into my workshop as a non starter, recovery driver reported fuel pump not working and vehicle broke down at a junction, we confirmed pump not priming and carried out all the checks to confirm pump had failed, we replaced the pump and now we have fuel pressure but engine will still not fire! cranks over and strong smell of fuel from exhaust.
engine check light is lit, but ecm wont connect to any of our scan tools i even purchased a new one which claims to be for US compliant vehicles and that won't connect (16 pin obd2 connector)
immobiliser key light goes out.
i have checked the connections at the cars diagnostic port and they seem to be correct power earth and the signal.
noid tester fitted to injectors and they are pulsing
spark plugs are wet when cranking over
spark is ok at spark plugs
air intake pipe removed and checked before afm
i removed the ecm and checked connections i did find one pins pushed back on one of the plugs, i put that back but no difference.

spark plugs had been changed with the leads not long ago by the owner,
could it be that the spark is firing in the wrong place ie the opti spark?
or an ecm failure which is also why we cannot connect our scan tools?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Mike.

If it is a '95, and it seems as if it is, then the OBD2 scan tool will not work. The '95 has an OBD2 connector, but the car is OBD1.

Here is a good reference for the Camaro. How to, diagrams, part numbers, etc. It also shows how to use a standard OBD1 scan tool with the OBD2 connector.

Thanks that would explain the connection problem, just need to locate an obd1 scanner now.

There is a link to a free scan/data logging program in the "sticky" threads at the top of the Computer Diagnostic and Tuning forum. You just need a laptop and a cable.

Why do you refer to it as 95/96? It should be either one or the other. There are significant differences between the 95 and 96 model years. As noted above 95 has an OBD-1 PCM. 96 is OBD-2.

Sorry its a UK habit, we usually refer to our models on the year of registration which used to be once a year March to March so it would be 94/95 or 95/96. just to confuse the issue more we now have two registrations a year March and September so a 13 plate car would have an early reg of PN13 ABC for March (example) or PN53 ABC for september which would take it through to 2014.

I will download the scan program and get hold of a lead, i had to wait until the customer came back from vacation to clear any further work.

thanks for the help.
