Cam Swap???
Cam Swap???
I spent 3H looking throught old threads! And never really found what I want.
I would like to just change the cam and timing chain if it's bad.I DONT want to change valve springs and retainers,or rocker arms.I will change them later as money allows, but the first step will be cam.I am going to order Hooker LT and off road Y and with it I would like to order a cam.I was thinking of cc502 or cc503 but I think the 503 needs springs.Any help would be GREAT!!! Oyea a MAD tune to go with the cam. Thanks

Re: Cam Swap???
Best bet is to simply wait a little longer and save up the money for the springs if you need. A lot of people don't even suggest running the stock cam with 1.6 rocker arms. The springs are apparently pretty close to their limit with the stock cams specs. Do the headers now, save up for the cam install is the best advise i could give you.
Re: Cam Swap???
Dude, dont rush into this. Im not trying to be mean or offensive but putting in a cam without the complimenting hardware is stupid and careless. At the VERY LEAST put in new pushrods with it. Springs would be great seeing as your stock springs are worn and probably not meant for the new cam's aggresive lobes and lifts, not to mention the lifters will be under much more stress seeing as the cam will be bigger. The timing chain runs on metal gears, they dont wear as often as many ppl think, i wouldnt replace the damn thing unless i was building a new motor, instead use that money for thet un-goddly expensive timing chain and invest in some pushrods, springs, lifters, and rocker arms...my cam swap cose me about $1,000...but i would have rather spent it, and done it right rather than be broken down on the side of the road.
Re: Cam Swap???
If you have a high mileage motor (over 70k or so) i think it'd be somewhat foolish to not replace the timing chain with atleast a factory replacement while your in there. The GM chains are less then $100 from a wholesale source. It's not that the gears wear out but the chain does stretch over time. When i pulled my engine and disassembled it with just under 90k miles it had quite a bit of slop in the chain.
