Cam Question for 383

I have a 383 cid LT1 and My engine builder wants to put the stock camshaft in in place of the Hotcam that I had installed. Still using my 1.7RR will this be the best drivability option? I had the heads ported and I'm wondering if this would be the best option before I go putting it back in

Re: Cam Question for 383

Going to the stock cam would be a huge mistake, imho...If drivability is a big concern and its a DD I highly recommend the small LPE cams and 1.6 rockers...I had the 211/219 .533/.560" lift on a 112 lsa...went high 11s/low 12s with it and ported LT1 heads, passed every emissions requirement in MD, and got 24 mpg on the hwy...While considered a weenie cam by many, its a great street cam that performs very well...There's also a 219/219 .560/.560 on a 112 that is also nice...I currently run a 226/234 .568" cam specd by Joe O. in my 383 and it flat out flies and drives very well also...You've got a few decisions to make here...I can tell you that the 211/219 LPE is a great cam from my experience...

Or go custom with Joe Overton/Bret Bauer....It all depends on how rushed you are to get it all back together...Don't make a rushed decision here...

Re: Cam Question for 383

A little late to say this but you should have gone with a different builder, as stated already the stock cam would be a mistake the HOT cam would even be very mild and in a bind I would do that long before a stocker.

Re: Cam Question for 383

yea, the stock cam will have excellent driveability.

However, there must be a reason you did a 383.

Slap your engine builder, and then tell him to install the damn hotcam.

Re: Cam Question for 383

Well He Reccommended Upgrading but he said between the two, not to use the Hotcam, and he said he was not knowledgeable in EFI but he's VERY good at Block Work.

Re: Cam Question for 383

There's got to be a reason for what your engine builder is saying. Are you deciding which cam to put in just temporarily, until you pick something better? If so, maybe your Hotcam looks like its more worn than the stocker. No question about it - putting a stock cam in a 383 is a total waste, and I can't figure out why anyone would suggest doing so.

The cam I'm running in my 383 is a bit bigger than the Hotcam... and I consider it to be very mild and street / DD friendly.

Re: Cam Question for 383

Yeah let's be real here. There is absolutely no reason why you would want to put the stock cam back in a 383. Even the hot cam would be too baby for it. I would suggest a custom from bauer or Joe O. if possible, bbut if not, and driveability and emmissions is a concern, look for something around a 220/220 .560/.560 on a 112. I am by no means a cam expert, so talk to the pros, but dady camming the crap out of it would defeat the purpose of building a 383 in the first place. You need a cam capable of taking at least some advantage of those heads.

Re: Cam Question for 383

Something else to think about with the 383 cam selection. With the 383 stroker and the type rods used, you "may" need a small base-circle cam for the rod bolts to clear some of the cam lobes. Your engine builder will need to check this regardless of the cam used. One thing for sure, the stock LT cam isn't the way to go, the Hot Cam would be the very minimum performance cam to use.

Re: Cam Question for 383

If your using eagle h beams you won't need a 1.050 cam (small base circle)
