to cam or not?
to cam or not?
i have some money to spend on my car this summer and really want to do a cam swap in my 95 m6. I have 72xxx miles on it. I figure if i'm ever going to do it it would have to now not in a year or two when the milage is higher and the risk of spinning a bearing is greater. So will my cam bearings be too worn to risk a cam swap with 72xxx on her?
Now i realize that it has to do alot with how the car was driven etc. so if its too close to call with the mileage i was thinking of just going in there and finding out so 1. how can i tell if my cam bearings need to be replaced?
2. If i take the cam out to inspect the bearings and they look not so good can i put the cam back in and be safe?

Re: to cam or not?
plenty of people change their cam at your mileage, I did with more and was fine, after my warranty expires at 75k I will throw in a cam and heads. I think a bigger problem people run into is getting crap into their engine when they do a cam swap, even small particles can destroy the engine, so just make sure you keep everything very clean and block off holes that will collect dirt, also some people put to much rtv goop onto seals for the oil pan and then it comes off inside and clogs the oli filter and boom, so just take your time and be careful about putting in the cam, slide it in real easy with lots of lube, some people use oil, but its better to use the the special lube (sorry can't think of the name) but every auto store has it. Read up on as much as you can with pictures so you can see what your getting into

i think i'm gonna just go for it. i've been waiting to do this for a while but is there anyway to tell if the cam bearings r gonna be a problem? i know if they show alot of copper its soposed to not be a good sign but is there some way to measure the wear w/ a mic' and know if the tolerances r too big?
