Cam install now nasty miss
When I was replacing mine a while back, it took a little extra oomph to get set it right. Maybe that, or maybe........you are lining the dowel pin up in the correct slot on the backside of the opti, right?
strange, driving home from work tonight it seemed to run 100%. HOLY HELL did it fly. then after like 4-5 WOT runs it seemed to go back to its sinful ways. this is not the first time this happened. If there was a problem with the actual opti/dowel pin wouldnt it run like crap PERMANENTLY? this is the second time on a cool night that it seemed to run awesome. While lookin down in the opti area, i found a dangling sensor that was supposed to be plugged in somewhere, dont know where though. it has two male ends. where does this go? i'm beginning to think this problem may not be the opti at all.
the dangling sensor was the IAT temp sensor. Pluggedit in and drove it for like 5 mins and the prob was still there, but better. BUT found another sensor on the driver side hanging, this one has purple rings at its base and has 3-4 wires coming to it.
could the IAT sensor not being plugged in cause this? do i have to restart the comp or will it eventually reset itself?

Try this:
Find and make sure ALL sensors and wiring harness pieces are plugged happily in their home. Reset PCM (remove power for a few minutes), and reconnect. Drive car, check for problems.
These engines are VERY finicky and will respond poorley to the loss of ANY sensor input.

The MAF connector has a purple seal and 3 wires. You might also be referring to the AIR pump electrical connector.
I can't believe that you are complaining of problems and haven't even connected everything back up.
It's pretty much a big waste of time to try to troubleshoot in that type of environment.

the air pump was removed so thats what the sensor was going to. i didnt realize the air pump had a sensor harness. my bad. gonna restart the computer and see how it goes. despite my ignorance, thanks for the help anyway...
