Re: Cam install............

Not NECESSARY to change timing chain. But definitely a good idea. If you have an LT-1 i assume it's probably close to 100k miles by now...most LT-1s are old enough that 100k miles isn't much. With that many miles a timing chain has gotten worn and will likely have some slack in it. So i would definitely replace it. Make sure you got some RTV handy for intake and water pump when you go to assemble everything

Another thing i'd suggest is some new lifters. A set of OEM style are cheap, no reason to risk running old ones with lots of miles on them. Also...how about some 1.6 ratio rockers

The timing set in not necessary, but not changing it would be foolish, IMO. I would suggest a set of lifters better than OEM replacement.

I'd also like to add that you might want to upgrade to a double roller chain. I'm doing a 306 right now and I went with a double roller. You could go with a stock chain but its gonna stretch alot quicker.

You should tell him that he would have to convert to an electric water pump, if he goes with the double roller.

Exactly, you might also consider having the spring seats set-up for the springs to acheive propper height.

I would also not expect the stock stamped rockers to live long over 6000 rpm and over .500 lift.

Re: Cam install............

You find out the diameter of the springs you are getting, if they are stock then you can use the stock seat, find out from the manufacturer their recomended installed height and shim accordingly. If the spring is larger around than stock springs then you will need stock locators to set the spring properly on the head , if you dont have the right size shim/locator the spring will eat up the aluminum under it. When you get the proper locator/seat/shim for the spring thenyou measure spring heihg with these in place and the right keepers then shim accordingly with the right with and thickness shims. To do it completely properly you would measure the actual springs force at the installed and open heights with a special spring scales. But since they are new they should be in spec.
