Question Advice on towing 2000 lb with my z28

Got sick of paying U-Haul every time I buy a new toy, or change locations, so installed a hitch, which is very hard to see from the rear since it tucks under and doesn't spoil the look of my Borla's . I bought a nice 5 by 10 Continental Cargo trailer that has empty weight of ~950 lb. I want to tow my personal belongings, tools, and a motorcycle, which will total add up to ~2000/2100 lb. I do have diamond subframe connectors, its an m-6 z-28. I need an advice on which gear to be in, what rpm's to shift, and what to be cautios about, and anything else I should know before towing. I did read that Scream And Fly tows his 2100 lb boat in a z-28, I think I am being reasonable about this.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I wouldn't use 6th unles the revs are above 2k or so. Other than that, there's not much chance of hurting anything. Main problem with towing is normally burning up automatic transmissions. Not a problem with the M6 and it can more than handle towing duties.

You might not want to use the bottle while towing.

yea, with the 306 i would say you should stay out of 6th all together, You maybe might even have to downshift into 4th, if you feel it lugging just thrower down a gear.

What if a ricer pops up while I am on a tow, still no nitrous ?

Good to know that m-6 can handle tow better. I will stay out of 6th gear, probably will be in 2nd in city, and in 4th/5th in highway

I'm almost positive that the maximum towing rating for the f-body is 1000 pounds...which is why I have never towed with one. I'm sure someone has tried more, but I wouldn't. My 2 cents.

What goes wrong or is hurt when towing more than that, suppose he was towing 5000 pounds, other than being hard to start moving, what would go awry?

not sure if the chassis is set up to tow too much. but 2000 if you have the TQ shouldn't be that much of a problem, just don't do it all the time.

Consider a set of Airlift bags not only are they great for towing and cargo(suppose you don't have room) but if you offset the pressures you can greatly benifit your launches at the track. You are probably going too find little use for 5th since it is an OD.

Have you thought about stopping????
Air bags will be a requirement.
Take it easy on the clutch too.

Never heard of Airlift bags, will look into them. Already towed ~2300lb for 340 miles, no trouble. Using 5th gear. Stopping is OK. I balace trailer neutrally, so rear suspension don't get upset. Got diamond SFC's fully welded (6 spots hard weld including on LCA bracket), boxed LCA's, couple other suspention parts. Car eats lots of gas on highway in 5th, and I still got 2K trip to California in a month.

Dump the trailer and use the entire bottle

Have you done anything about the brakes? The LT1 brakes are so poor i couldn't imagine adding anymore weight and not do anything about brakes.

Re: Advice on towing 2000 lb with my z28

The Airlifts go inside the rear coils, fairly simple install and inexpensive think they are $70. Brakes might be a concern but then again with a T56 and 3.73s compression braking should be of some help.
