Cam help, advice needed

Guys, a friend and I are shopping around for the best cam for our dollar. We don't want something that everyone else is running, so the HotCam and CC306 are out.

We talked with Lunati, and they suggested to us one of their cams. They faxed us the numbers and they look nice. We popped them into our Desktop Dyno, and based on our stock motor (can't really indicate all mods) and Long Tubes headers with mufflers, we got roughly a 85HP gain off the cam!! That's unreal...even with a margin of error, 65+ HP.

My question is, what do you guys think of this cam, and how it would perform in the LT1.

Lunati Cam 50162
242/252 Duration
.525in .540 ex @ 1.5 lift
.560in .576ex @ 1.6 lift
108 LSA

Is this TOO extreme? What would you guys suggest if we go with this cam?

That 108 LSA will definitely help to keep the peak hp in a reasonable range with such big duration- somewhere in the 6000-6200 range I'd imagine. However, w/such large duration and a 108 LSA, the cam will tend to be very peaky. You are getting into solid-roller territory...but if there are no clearance issues, it should make good power. My friend and I have been playing with the idea of a custom grind for a while. Running through some iterations in DD 2000, I came up with the following specs:

233/248, .570/.580 110 LSA

Holey moley, thats a big cam, I would hesitate putting that in my 383, but thats just me and I'm not expert. I kinda doubt you will have much vacuum for brakes etc with a 108 LSA and your gonna really want some gears. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but that seems like an extremely large cam for a 350.

Also, I hope you are getting ported heads otherwise it ought to be interesting seeing you drive around with that thing. Is this a daily driver? I would be interested to see how this turns out if you go with it, keep us posted.

Both our cars are daily drivers. My friend is wanting a cam ASAP...I, on the other hand, am waiting a little while before I do this. Even though our cars are daily drivers, we do have access to alternater means of transportation.

FOr his use, I was thinking of maybe that cam wtih a 112, 114 LSA since he's going to spray the hell out of it. Me, I'd probably stick with the 108, or maybe go up to 110.

Power brakes are an issue we are trying to address. But, from what I can tell (LSA aside) the numbers on this cam aren't THAT much higher than the CC306...and people report no problems on stock heads with their car being a daily driver.

Regardless, I'm waiting til winter when I can buy myself a beater truck before I do something like this.

I'll let you know what we decide for my friend.
