cam help

I have a 355 shortblock thats already built and ready to go.
.030 over, balanced, etc.
-5cc srp forged pistons
je file fit rings
scat rods
scat cast crank
clevite h series
.045 quench

I wanted to get a heads/cam package but the budget ain't going to allow it at this time and I'm ready to get the car back on the road before summer is gone. I think I will just clean them up myself and have them milled alittle.

Car is mainly a weekend cruiser and don't plan on making many trips to the track. Like for it to rev to 6400 and shift 6100-6200. I'm going to put 3000-3200 stall in it while motor is out. And plan on doing 3.73 gears later.

I thought about the cc503 but dcr comes out pretty high, gm846 dcr is kinda low. I was shooting for a dcr of 8.6 to 8.9 cause brett says its a good way to make torque. The XE230/236 gives me the dcr in that range, but due to the steep lobes are there a valvespring that won't cause valve float but still be able to use my SA pro mags? And how streetable woudl it be? Heck what about the cc306(only thing I don't want to rev it that high)

I've searched and searched, but I'm just going around in circles.

Re: cam help

Sounds like you are looking for a pretty specific cam. How much more is a custom cam from Brett rather than the of the shelf cams? I would pay the extra$$$. In the long run, you will be happier knowing that you have the right cam for your application.

You won't be shifting in the range you want to if you get the 230/236. It wants to be revved high, and your low end will suffer.

Re: cam help

I think the CC503, very streetable along with good power.

A manley Nextek spring setup will be good, and will allow the SA rockers to be used.
Spring kit # 221423-16
Steel retainers # 23664-16
Ti retainers # 23634-16

I have had good experiance with these, and have several procharged 383 LT-4's running around with them.

I think you guys are running into SA rocker issues because of +.050 keepers, the +.050 retainers should not cause problems, I never use SA rockers so maybe someone else can chime in. You will need to get to 1.750" installed for a minimum 120 on the seat.

Re: cam help

Don't get too wiggy about the DCR... just get in in a decent range and you will be happy. The one thing that's nice about a 355 is the fact that you can get good quench and compression out of it thru zero decking the block. On a setup with stock heads your RPM limited by the heads anyways, so don't worry a ton about your MAX RPM since the bottom end is going to let you spin higher than the heads.

The SA rockers are a little issue. The best spring for what you want to do is a beehive but you would have to run the 7° locks which can give you issues with installed height on the heads. Not to mention the SA stuff is only 3/8th's stud, which is not the best either. I'm working on a retainer with Old SStroker that should fix this problem, hopefully.
