Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
Hey Guys,
I have 2 cams right now and I am trying to decide which one to use.
1. Combo Motorsports TS224XL: Dur@.050 224-236 | Lift .536-.555 (w/ 1.6) | LSA 114...makes power to ~6400 rpms
2. Custom Grind similar to GTP 5: Dur@.050 236-236 | Lift .565-.565 (w/ 1.6) | LSA 112...makes power to ~6800 rpms
Other parts that I am using:
Mild ported LT1 heads w/ stock valves
Comp 986 Springs w/ Steel Retainers
Comp R Lifters
Comp Hardened Pushrods
Comp 7/16" NSA 1.6 RRs
Stock Intake
Stock TB (for now)
LT4 ED Timing Set
Stock Water Pump
SLP 1 3/4 Shorty Headers
Borla Exhaust
MSD Digital 6 and Blaster Coil
SVO 30 lb Injectors
Fully Built 4L60E w/ 3200 Vigilante Converter
3.23 gears
MadZ28 Tune for now...Dyno Tune Later
TNT nitrous kit 100-150 shot
All this will be put on a new 355 w/ SpeedPro Forged Pistons, Eagle H-Beam Rods, Stock Crank and Stock 2 Bolt Mains w/ ARP Studs
Basically the reason I have 2 cams is that I was going to put the 224 on my stock bottom end and save the custom grind for the new 355 since it will rev higher, but now I am just going to build the 355 since I have 110K miles and I want to keep spraying the car.
So help me decide which one to use.
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
Use the split duration cam, with just a mild port job and stock valve size along with stock intake, you need the extra duration and lift on the exhaust to make power and torque.
Re: Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
If it were my car I would go for the 224-236 cam. That one will better match to other components and give all the rpm you can use with better driveability.
Re: Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
Use the split duration. Stock or near stock lt1 heads dont have good enough flow on the exhuast side and this requires more exhaust duration. Why do you think that the 306(230/244) works so good.
Re: Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
Other people basically said it. But not only do you need a split pattern cam due to head flow, unless you have a custom dual setup the 4th gen exhaust system is also quite restrictive, necessitating the split pattern.

I have always figured that a split pattern cam would be better, but I got the single pattern cam because I saw some great power numbers with this exact cam...
96 SS w/355, RGR Stage 2 heads, A4, 2800 stall, 12 bolt.....392 rwhp, 380 rwtq, 12.41 @110 NA
96 Z28 stock bottom end, RGR Stage 2 heads, th400, 9".....352rwhp, 409 rwtq & 463rwhp & 565rwtq (175 shot), 10.79 @ 125 (175 Shot)

Re: Cam Gurus - I have 2 cams, help me select which one to use
Here's a comparison w/ the 224 cam
97 Z28 stock shortblock, mild heads, A4, 10 bolt.....11.99 @ ??? NA, 10.48@126 (200 shot)
So not sure on the dyno numbers, but track numbers actually look a little better w/ the 224 split cam.
