Cam gears

Do I need to (or should I) get new cam gears with a new stock LT1 timing chain and a hotcam? My car has 88k on it. Jason Cromer is selling the chain and gears for $65. Is that a decent price?

Thanks

That price is good for both gears and chain.

Thanks for the responses but I meant do I need the gears? I already did some searches and I don't want to spend the money on a new opti and hd set so I'm just gonna go new stock. BTW I asked my local performance shop how much it would be to install the cam and he said $1300
So I'm doin it myself

Thanks again

Yes, get them. No reason not to replace them with that many miles. It's cheap insurance.

"supposedly" its not recommended to use a new chain with used gears, for whatever reasons i dont know. only what ive seen people say on here. i myself bought a set of used lt4 gears, but with a new chain, so.... the car hasnt been run , not even started up yet so i cant say anything definite, but im not worried. but anyway, for that price (65$), might as well just get it all (gears and chain), its not like youre spending 300$ or something. hth

The chain stretches and wears over time. Because of this the chain and gears establish a wear pattern to each other. It may be hard to see or with more wear, fairly apparent. Changing them as a unit will give you a "tighter" setup.

If you have ever been around dirt bikes, you can easily see the exaggerated wear patterns on the chain and drive sprockets. The timing set is not subjected to such severe conditions, but you get the idea.

You should change the gears with standard flat link timing setups because the gears develop a wear pattern with the chain. The LT4 timing set you have is a true roller so you don't have to worry about replacing the gears.
