dowel pin

I need to know how much this dowel pin needs to be sticking out of the end of my camshaft. I'm going to measure mine this weekend when I replace my 3rd opti. I noticed the last time the distributor didn't slide all the way up to the motor.

Thanks yall.

Take the cam and your 95 stock one to a machine shop and tell them what you want.

These are the things the specialize in and will understand what you want done.

my stock cam is gone, so I just need the measurements. I'm working with this cam while cam is still in the motor in the car.

Thanks

no anaik, it isn't.

That is the length of the dowel pin, without the depth of the hole that it goes in, so that ins't the length of the dowel pin sticking out of the end of the cam shaft.

I called Comp Cams, and they sent me their dowel pin that they use in their cams with a note that stated:

We only have one pin we use for the LT1's so you will need to check the height for your year motor and if this pin is a little long then you will have to grind it shorter.

Yall, I measured this dowel pin and the one that they sent me is 1 and 1/4 inches long. I don't know the depth of the hole that it goes in, so I'll let yall know what I find.

Maybe everyone that has an aftermarket cam are the only ones having this trouble? I don't know but I know that the comp cam that I paid $240 has destroyed 2 optis in less than 6 months. (maybe I should have caught it, but such is life)

Let me know about the length sitcking out of the cam if anyone finds out.

ALRIGHT!

I think we have a winner.

I took my old opti off and then measured my cam dowel pin. It measured .068" . I took some plumbers putty and stuck in the new opti. I had to grind my cam dowel pin down to .035" until I felt that there was enough clearance between the tip of the dowel pin and opti.

I started it up with no problem and it drives like a dream. (it even feels faster but yall know even when you wax your car it seems faster)

I'll keep comming back to give updates to make sure that this took care of my problems for the long run.

So those measurements were from the front of the cam gear to the end of the pin? What cam gear are you using?

cam gear

You know since you said that shoe, I remember the machine shop sold me a slightly larger gear for my camshaft. They said that it takes that small amount of play out of the chain for longevity. I'll get that part # for yall so you will know what it is, but it is a GM issued cam gear.

Later
