Cam dowel length from cam gear?

Ok, I searched many a thread mentioning cam dowel length with the majority saying it was .620 in length. My question is, does anybody have the correct length on an installed cam with the cam timing chain sprocket on. I have a cloyes double roller and was wanting the correct length from the outside of the cam sprocket to the end of the cam dowel. I measured mine and it was 11/32-12/32(3/8) or between .3437-.3875. My optispark disentegrated on me in normal driving not 20 miles after putting a new motor back together. ANy numbers? Thanks, Roy

Protrusion from the front of my stock cam gear was .410", but my dowel pin was .650" from the face of the cam. Cam gear thicknesses can vary, so the measurement should be considered ballpark.

did you shorten it at all before you installed it? Mine was extremely long and had to be shortened quite a bit. If you haven't shortened it at all i would just go ahead and pull it back out because when you try to cut it you don't want those metal shavings around the motor anyways.
