Buying an OBD1 Scanner
Buying an OBD1 Scanner
Looking at buying an inexpensive scanner. Saw the Innova Equus 3120 on Amazon for $142.98. From the short video they have sounds like a great deal. Anybody have any exp with one of these. I have a 94 Z28, and kids have a 95 Z28 and 94 Formula.
Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
I bought a cable for my 95 which works for Datamaster and Tuner Cats, then I made one that works for my 89 IROC. I had to build a 2 transistor circuit it works with WINALDL, but won't with Datamaster. It should work with the 93's and 94's.
Of course I have to hook up my old Sony Vaio with a serial port to use either.
They didn't have the USB when I bought the cable for the 95 and I didn't find any circuit diagrams that showed how to use the usb setup, only the serial, for my 89.
ALDL Cable = plug and play $50 from ALDLCables.com years ago.
Cable for 89 IROC = less than $10 at Radio Shack. I had planned to hard wire this in at some point, but haven't gotten that far.

Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
For OBDI, Datamaster is free, cables are around $60. No-brainer there.
If you want a scanner that does OBD I and II, you're going to have to shell out some bigger bucks. It would be cheaper to have two scanners truthfully, Datamaster and an inexpensive auto parts store scanner.
Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
A person needs OBDI and II these days, unless they are going to be stuck in OBDI forever. I suspect that some time in the future, something will replace OBDII.
The only thing I wonder about that Equus is if it will do real time read outs. A couple of the comments leads me to believe it doesn't, that it only reads what's stored in the PCM.

Per the TTS Power Systems website:
DataMaster allows free unlimited playback of files without any authorization codes needed. However, the software is limited to 20 "free" recording sessions before an authorization code must be purchased. After authorization, DataMaster recording sessions are unlimited.
Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
Bought the scanner but now have a problem, it works on my 1994 but my son's 1995 has a 16 pin connector and it won't work on that. I called them and they said even if i get an adapter it won't read as it's a whole different computer. So it looks like I'll be sending it back. Can Datamaster do a 16 pin?
Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
The '95 is OBD1, the same as the '94. However, as you have discovered, it has an OBDII connector. There is a way to jump the pins from the car to the scan tool. Shoebox has it somewhere on his site.
Re: Buying an OBD1 Scanner
It's not a matter of Datamaster being able to read the PCM, it's the particular cable that you use. They are inexpensive.
