bump-stop modification with 17x11s
bump-stop modification with 17x11s
I'm trying to fit some ZR-1 17x11 replica's on my 97 TA and am having some trouble with the bump-stops--hitting the rim or coming really close. I may have to remove material or relocate them and was wondering what some of you have done that have had similar bump stop problems.
Also:
How much clearance do I need between the bump stops and the rim?
How much clearance do I need between the tires and wheel wells?
Thanks
Greg

I just took the corners off the jounce bumper brackets, and pounded them a little. But the bumpers are still there. Works fine. The problem is just the corners of the brackets catching on the inside of the rim at full drop.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to get by with just grinding some material off of the corners, but it was still a little too close. I had to cut them off. But since I didn't want to run without bumpstops, I made some new brackets so that they are mounted a little further in.
Also for wheel well clearance, I've got a good 1/2 inch all around. Is this enough?

hmm, well that seems fine. However, if u do need to remove them i see no harm, i've been running them for about a year no probs in normal driving. Only thing that happened was when i was going 80 and i spun the car out with the juice and slammed my right rear tire into the concrete barrier then the axle went so far up it bend my exhaust pipe a little and cut my tire on the fender. Actually, u prob should leave them, haha
Just wondering but what offset are you running? The fbody offset (5?mm) or the corvette offset (36mm)?
What I hear from others is that if your car is lowered and you want to run 17X11's with 315's out back then your supposed to go with the fbody offset.
BUT like most of us who don't lower their cars 17X11's with 315s rub with the fbody offset. So the solution to running a 315 out back on a non lowered car is to run the corvette offset. Can anyone one confirm this? I know I've seen it somewhere. You don't need to roll the fenders or pound them in, or the bumb stop even.

I'm running the 50 mm offset for the rears. I've read that the 38 mm offset may require fender rolling but is fine on the inner wheel well and bump stop. The 50 mm usually doesn't require fender rolling, but may require "massaging" the inner wheel well and/or bump stop modification.
But there seems to be a lot of variation out there with 17x11 wheels and every f-bodys. Some are lucky enough to be able to bolt them right on. Others have to do the above alterations.
I'd still like to know how much clearance is necessary all around.
I havn't taken a sledge to the wheel well yet because I have a good 1/2" or more of space all around the wheel. Is this enough clearance?

The 50mm offset just looks better (IMHO), whether the car is lowered or not, because it keeps the wheel/tire just barely inside the fender line when you look straight down from the top of the fender. A 38mm offset will stick out of the fender 1/2" more than this on each side:

There's a fairly extensive thread on 50mm vs 38mm offset on the "Appearance" forum..... look for "Anybody got pictures of 17x11 w/ 38mm offset" topic, or something like that.
