Broken EX612 Valve spring.

Driving my car friday night a valve spring decided to break. Broke into about 3 peices. Spring came completely off the valve so it im guessing it probably made contact with the piston.

Looks like I have all the peices so thats a good sign, hopefully there is no metal elswhere in the motor. Is there any chance the valve isnt bent or messed up. Im hoping it maybe ok if the piston was hitting it flat at low RPM and it was moving freely with no rocker or spring on it. I think Im going to throw another spring on it and see if that cylinder will hold compression.

pull the valve closed by hand and lossen the other rocker, put some air in the cylinder, and see if any air comes out the intake/exhaust, if none comes out, your good(you will get some out the oil filler/crankcase=normal), if air does come out the exhaust/intake, then you have a bent valve

Ok I will try that. It was the intake spring that broke.

Im guessing the valve is probably bent. I lossened the exhaust rocker and pulled the intake valve up. Will not hold any pressure at all and there is a good bit of wind blowing out of the throttle body.

So now what are the chances that the head is messed up?

Got the head pulled today, Valve is bent and the guide is cracked. How much can I expect to pay a machine shop to replace it?

1 guide, 1 valve, shouldn't be too much

Do a search, might be your not the only one with problems with those springs. I could be wrong and it's not the 612s, but if it were me trashing a spring I would wonder if it's going to happen again.

Yeah, I will be replacing all the valve springs with something differnet. Probably the comp bee hives.

Do what Lloyd is doing and move up to the crane 10308 spring kit. .600 lift and up to 7000rpm's for under $150.

If you want another 612 springs, just send me a PM.

I have a few sets here and you can have 1 for free.

I would REALLY sugguest going with the Comp 26918-16, 795-16 and 611-16 set up. This will be about $275-300. These will clear the almost any rocker and have even more retainer/rocker clearance than the 612 springs.

The Crane 10308-1 dbl spring, retainer and lock kit will also be a BIG upgrade over what you have. These will clear the Comp Pro Mag rockers but some of the "wide body" rockers have retainer/rocker contact problems. These are $150 or so thru Jegs/Summit.

Well not really you have to shim them up enough to work that they aren't going to get .600" lift in there. The Crane kit is the standard on the LE1 heads.

Lloyd is right, the beehive upgrade is about that price and the best bet out there. That's why it's the standard on everything above the LE1 heads.

I decided to go with the comp 26918-16, 795-16 and 611-16 set up.

Will I need to shim these springs?
