Are the break in oils worth the extra expense (royal purple specifically as its stocked). I dont mind the extra expense if it is.

Break in oils are usually high in extreme pressure additives that normal oils have in minimal levels. If I'm not mistaken, the breakin oils are high in ZDDP, a zinc based additive. Regular oils have been formulated with a minimum level of that for a number of years as it is an environmental concern and that it can poison a catalytic convertor.

That said, the main reason we used break in oils back in the olden days was to protect flat tappet lifters on start up. That really isn't a problem any longer with roller lifters, minimizing the need for special oils.

So, you make the call. You won't hurt a thing by using these oils but I don't think you'll really need them. I, personally, used regualr oil when I rebuilt my engine and changed it after the first 250 miles and cut open the oil filter looking for trouble.

That was pretty much my thoughts as well and they had to claim the additives help the rings seat or they wouldnt sell to any of the roller motors. Im tempted to do a little mix as ill be about 8qt capacity and definately wouldnt want to put $80 in oil unless it truly makes a difference in a roller motor. Engine builder didnt recomend and plenty of people dont use it but I surely dont know if it has any advantage. Thanks guys.
