Bolt on Help
Bolt on Help
First my car, it is a 93 LT1 Z28 owned by my mother before me with about 35,000 original miles (I also own my fathers 1980 Z28 all original with 80,000 on it now). It is stock except for a Moroso CAI kit I put on it. I am purchasing some 1.7RR with guidplates etc. I also have purchased some Hooker shorty headers for it. I would like to dyno it before and after the upgrades. Now to my questions. #1 On the 1.7 Scorpion RR it says some LT1's will have to have there valve covers clearanced. Does anyone have some already done valce covers? Tips on how to do them? Better gaskets like the rubber ones to help?
#2 I already know the headers are going to suck to do, is there a link to some helpful tips on these as well? What kind of bolts should I use? Torque?
Next is the list of things I want for the car and questions
#1 TB bypass does anyone sell a kit with everything I need all in it ready to go I figure it will save me a couple trips to the hardware and I will have every thing I need plus good instructions.
#2 Cat and catback, I was looking into the Magnaflow systems but I dont want real loud just good flow I like the quiet almost stock sounding but power making exhaust. Is there something out there better?
#3 52 MM TB I know there was a guy that would bore mine out and add an airfoil for a decent price and the 93's are different so its a pain to find one used. Anyone know his name etc or have any recommendations for this?
#4 Tune, I need a good tune and I cant remember the guys name that specialilzes in the 93 Speed density cars. Some help here too.
#5 Gears, How can a sports car possibly get 2.73 gears in it even an auto??? The manufacterers are crazy. I would like a set of 3.73 I know the carrier is different but on my stock car I used a shim so I could retain the stock carrier where mine is posi and under 40 K I would like to. Are there any bad things about this and just buying a neew or used set of gears?
#6 Are there any other free HP gains out there like the TB bypass that I have over looked?

2)Hooker 3" is the most quiet and still adds the normal amount of power
3)You don't need a new TB until you get P&P work done to the air induction system
4)pcmforless and madZ28 tune, there is another i think
6)Some people think deleteing the MAF gives you more power, I wouldn't do it though.
Re: Bolt on Help
I was checking out your post earlier and got swamped in the reading. Here's my advice to your questions.
Headers:
12pt bolts worked for me. What I liked was the ability to get a wrench at it in all directions. Some guys also use locking bolts. You can use a felpro gasket from any Kragens, Pepboys or AutoZone. It would be good to have an extra hand if it's your first time. Re-Tighetn bolts after a few heat cycles. Shorties are easy to install btw. Search in the LT1 section for a install guide and other opinions on bolts and gaskets. Just make sure you be easy on those possibly rusted bolts, liquid wrench them and take your time.
TB Bypass:
Simple kit you can get from BMRfabrications.com. The item is on their MISC page and the instructions is on a link to the left. The kit is like a hose repair kit you can get from Pepboys or even a hardware store.
Cats & Catback:
Leave the Cats alone. Catback like Borla is spendy but has a smooth tone thats sounds awesome. Magnaflow is a good choice with a nice flow sound and I'm considering as well, easy on the pocket. The polished finish is also pretty cool.
TB 52:
I wouldnt waste your time on a bigger TB with a stock engine. I guess you could get an airfoil from slponline.com. But it's up to you.
Tune:
In the Cz28 Vendor page, MadZ28 and Pcmforless do great mail order tunes!
Gears:
If you already have 3.23..I wouldnt worry about 3.73's since you can go with a bigger converter. With 2.73's I'd probably wanna go with 3.73's since it's a big jump. Use GM gears. Might be a good idea to replace bearings as well.

Re: Bolt on Help
i too have a 1993 Z28 A4. I went with the pcmforless tune and its great. I went for 3.23s to Richmond 3.73s and haven't looked back. There are some TB bypass kits on ebay. Feel free to ask any more questions, just shoot me a pm.
Oh, 93s don't have a MAF so don't worry about that.

Re: Bolt on Help
Thanks to all that replied. The question on the gears is that a 2.73 gear I cant use the carrier without putting a shim in it. I have used them before for my race car but I wanted to get an opinion on them before I subjected it to street use. Should I use one or just try and find a series III carrier to fit the new gears on?
Re: Bolt on Help
I didn't need any kit or any parts at all for the TB Bypass. The coolant line that went into the driver side of the TB reached all the way to the line running next to the intake on the pass side.
