Blue smoke after cam install?
Blue smoke after cam install?
I just finished up a cam swap in my 92 and have a couple questions about some issues I am having.
I now leave a nice trail of blue smoke at WOT. It also starts hard now. The only thing I can think that might be causing this was when I installed the hub on the crank I used a soft pipe and a hammer to drive it on aways. Maybe I moved the crank a tad and its hanging up on the thrust bearing?
Maybe I should check the valvetrain alignment. I am sure the new cam and old cam had the same base circle, but maybe not.
Any other idea's?

I put my hub on by hammering it too. I really hope to God I did not mess anything up. I tried to be gentle (if that's possible hammering metal to metal) but I was out of options. Stripped threads twice, even put it in the oven and the bitch still didn't want to go on without a fight. Anyways, is there a way to tell if you messed something up before you start the vehicle initially or do I have to wait until I start it and see if it is hard to start??? I can't afford that kind of damage, screw GM for not using a keyed hub to begin with.

Did you change springs and valve seals?I had the same problem at WOT.It was a slight valve cover leak at the rear, running on the headers.

Anyone think I might be sucking oil up through the intake?
I doubt this has anything to do with hammering the hub on, I think hwat you are experiencing is either an intake gasket leak, or valve cover leak, or did you cut out the PCV little box in the valve cover(fergot the name darn
), or if you didn't change valve seals then that would cause that too, reason being because with time the valve seal & the valve got a wearn pattern, once you change lift by putting either rockers/cam or both on then a part of the valve that was never introduced to the seal now gets introduced, this will cause the valve seal to fail at times.

This really should have nothing to do with pounding on the hub(unless you ruptured the oil pan gasket/crank seal). It also has nothing to do with valvetrain alignment.

I changed the springs, but not the valve seals. I'll check the valve covers tonight.

It only blows blue somke at WOT, out of the tail pipes. The rings should eb good, motor only has about 12k on it, and did not smoke prior to the cam swap. I thought if the valve seals were bad it would smoke on start up, but then clear up? I am thinking/hoping its intake. I did re-use the intake to head gaskets because they are only 12,000 miles old and looked brand new. I guess that is prolly my problem.
