blown head gasket/ cam thoughts?
i have a 1995 z28 with a blown head gasket. the motor has about 100,000 miles and is bone stock. while i was in the motor replacing the head gaskets i was thinking about putting a cam in. the car is a 6-speed. whats the biggest cam anyone has put in a stock motor without vacume boosters and hp lose?
Re: blown head gasket/ cam thoughts?
Look at a CC503(comp cams) or GM 847 cam. You would need to also replace the valve springs, locks & retainers, the stock springs are only good for a stock cam. You would also need at least a mail order tune (pcmforless.com), and long tube headers to make the cam worth doing. If you start moving more air through the stock exhaust, it will not breathe nearly as good as if you had headers. It's all about money, but plan on spending $700 for all the cam & valve springs, etc. Then another $4-600 for headers, and $190 for the re-program(required). You add all that up and you better have $2k sitting around. You will love the results though.
Re: blown head gasket/ cam thoughts?
I think what he ^ meant was the GM846 cam, not the 847...
And keep an eye on the for sale section. You can save a bunch of money buying used, but good, parts.
