Blindly adjusting roller rockers
Hello, Ive been to ShoeBox's site on adjusting 1.6 rockers etc, but i think /know i would really mess it up. My situation is--when my car is running it sounds like i have more noise clicking under my passenger side valve covers than on my driver side-driver's side has some noise also. I can hear some kind of clacking/clicking noise under my car on the passenger side door at idle coming from the front. Seems like i can hear the noise clacking louder when i give it the gas. Can i do like it sezs on ShoeBox's site and paint a mark on top of my RR's and just turn and lock them down a quarter turn and see what happens or is that suicide? Also this car burns rich and was wondering if it was tied in somehow. I have the Comp Cam 7/16 1.6 roller rockers Thanks for your advice in advance. Dwayne Shreveport La.
Re: Blindly adjusting roller rockers
If you are going to make any adjustments, you need to get the lifter on the base circle of the lobe (by whatever method you choose), back the nut off, find zero lash and then add your preload. There is no short-cutting it. Or use the engine running method.
Re: Blindly adjusting roller rockers
Thanks for the help, I can read the instructions, but ive never messed with this stuff, so preload, zero lash and all those other terms that come natural to you guys, are somewhat Greek to me. Thats why i was wondering if i could just go down the row and mark each rocker with paint for reference and just turn each one a quarter turn tighter. It never that easy for a somewhat non-mechanic. Thanks for your replies --Dwayne

Pull the valve cover and start the engine. Take a 2ft section of old garden hose and use like a steathescope to find which valve is clacking. Loosen the retainer and tighten until the clacking stops, then tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn more and tighten.
You can adjust with the engine running for all your valves this way and is an alternate method to the adjust, rotate, adjust, rotate method, if its all confusing to you.
Lots of people use the "running" method and some even cut the tops of some old valve covers to cut down on any oil splatter that you may get. Really its not that messey of a job, but things can get hot under there.

When adjusting rockers you have coulpe methods that involve the engine off to save a mess.
Method A: By feeling the pushrod.
Method B: By compression guage.
Method A is the easiest, but your not able to squeeze every once of power out of the engine. Most people use this method. You need to make sure the valve you are adjusting is all the way closed. The best way to confirm this is to look at its mate/other valve beside it, is pushed all the way up. Bump the motor till the pushrod has one pushed all the way open. When its all the way open you know the other is closed. Loosen your lock and nut, tighten the nut untill you can barely turn the push rod. Then mark where its, at loosen, then tighten the hell out of it back to the mark.
Method B is alot more time consuming but will put you dead on the money. Use a compression guage. Adjust each valve untill it has reached its highest compression value then tighten to that spec.
