bleeding the coolant- what am i doing wrong here?

I got a needle valve and clear tubing from home depot to bleed the air out of my coolant (i didnt bleed after doing the flush this spring). Ok, so i:

1) have the rad cap open
2) turn motor on and let it warm up with the heater set on high
3) after it is warm, i open up the bleed screw on top of the thermostat

a bit of fluid is being expelled from the tubing attached to my bleeder, but not a steady stream like in the pictures ive seen from some websites showing how to do this procedure. the thing that worries me the most is that A LOT of coolant is gushing out of the rad cap...

is this normal? what am i doing wrong here?

mike.

Close the cap to bleed it. It wont shoot out without pressure, and it wont pressureize without a cap.
