Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

I know that shoebox has a link for bleeding the coolant. And I have done a search.

I have been having trouble with my "low coolant light" coming on. And I know my car is not low on coolant.

Often the coolant will over flowfrom the reserve tank and come out while I am driving. Not to mention the temp guage shooting into the RED!!!

I have tried to bleed the coolant system of air. the bleed screw on top of the water pump will bleed the air out and eventually coolant will come out. So I tighten the screw and try the other one.

The other one is the hose that comes from the fire wall and connects to another part of the water pump. When I try to bleed that screw nothing but air comes out. And coolant does not come out.

Is this a sign of a bad water pump? Or am i doing something wrong?

Since I bought this car it has been over heating and I need to fix this problem so any help would be great.

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

Start with a cool engine and fill (if needed) according to my website instructions. Leave the cap off the radiator and let the engine warm up until the thermostat is open. You should see coolant flow in the radiator (especially if you rev it a little). If you don't see flow, something is probably wrong with your pump or you might want to check the thermostat.

Blowing coolant out the reservoir is not normal and it could merely mean you have a bad radiator cap.

Well its not the radiator cap. Just got back from advance with a new radiator cap. Drove one block and it over heated again.
Overflowing from res tank.

Did you follow Shoebox's suggestion with regard to checking for coolant circulation?

Not yet I have to wait for the engine to cool. But I did note the suggestion. And will try it ASAP.

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

I had the same problem...someone here scared me and said it was my head gasket that had gone out so it blew air into my manifold or something in that sort but i bleeded the system ...took about 10 min because i kept refilling and
the level in the radiator kept dropping (thats how much air was in the radiator). When I would come to a red light the temp will rise really quickly and if i put the car in neutral and reved it, the gauge went down a bit but climbed again and as soon as the car was in motion the temp dropped again..and oh yeah...I had water leaking out the reservoir while parked and the car was on and it was worse after I shut the car off...if it sounds similar then you its mostlikely just air.
I am sucking air in through a small pinhole at the neck of the radiator and with my tax return i am hoping to get this radiator replaced ASAP...
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

Actually sums up all of the symptoms I have observed.

Did your "low coolant light" stay on?

I opened up the radiator cap and after a while I finally noticed the water pump pumping in some coolant. So thats good. (kind of.... because I ordered a new water pump on line and it will be here tomorrow)

So I think I will just keep the water pump and wait until I buy an opti and switch both of them out at the same time.

Any suggestions why my "low coolant light" is on?

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

My car had similar bleed symptoms when the heater core was clogged (Fing dex cool), but no low coolant light. Might be worth unhooking the heater core at the firewall and running a garden hose to see if it flows. The thermostat is super easy to change too, if it's stuck shut, might do something similar. Good luck

The low coolant light for no reason is a common problem. Replacing the sensor is usually the fix. However, if your coolant level is fluctuating up and down due to other reasons, then the sensor may take a little time to settle down after everything is stable.

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

wELL GET THIS....

I bled out the air. So i decided to drive it to a buddy's house (about 4 miles away)

it made it the there no probs.

I drove back and it started to over heat again. I decided it was not that far to my house so I decided to keep going.

1 block from my house the whole car SHUTS OFF!!!! It will not crank back up!!!

I had to push it back home.

Does anybody have a guess as to what happened????

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

well its really not good that the car died. U just better hope that u did not warp the heads. but I just reacently have a similer problem i was sitting in my car with it idle for about 45 min when i happen to look at the guages and the temp was almost in the red. i turned the car off and it steamed and overflowed over the overflow tank. well i let it sit for about 3 hours and went back out and took it for a drive as long as i was moving it was good but as soon as i would stop it would shoot up. well i pulled in to store and put it in park and watched the temp rise so i rev it up a little and it instantly went back down. i replace the t-stat(180 at autozone for 7.99) fixed the prob. also my heater was not working so i traced the 2 hoses coming for the heater core and i un hooked them both and put a water hose on the end off one of the hoses and flushed it out. works perfect now. well hope this helps

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

This maybe a kinda dumb sounding but is your collant 50/50 with water? 100% coolant will overheat very quickly.

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

With the engine cool, take the radiator cap off and make sure it is full of water. Start the engine. Check to see if the radiator starts to overflow right away. Not trying to scare you, but a lot of times that does mean a blown head gasket. One more thing. If your car overheats, never try to make it one more block. Aluminum heads are very prone to warping so you may have added to your original problem.

Re: Bleeding the coolant...NEED HELP

Yes I realize that now.

But the good news is the car cranked up again this morning, after a jump.

I bled even more hot air out of the system. Is it possible for my car to be sucking in air nto the coolant system when it should not?

When I bleed the air the temp guage goes down. I will bleed the air until nothing but coolant comes out, shut the bleed screw and drive around the block and it will overheat by the time I get around the block(almost RED). Then I bleed it again and there is still air coming out.

I have a 160* thermostat in (new), changed the gaskets, and I am using Castrol Syntec motor oil.
