Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

I was running .608/.613 lift on 112 degrees 236/242 duration. On the stock cubes it was AMAZING. I did it with stock unported heads. Didnt loose much of any bottom end but the top end pulled like bat outta hell. It felt like a turbo car the way it accelerated. The cam and valvetrain with some bolt-ons and a 3200 stall. Was enough to pull a friends 03 cobra with exhaust on the street along with other heads cam cars. I never ran it at the track but I would have guessed mid low 12s.
Big cams rule. We had the shifts at about 6800 and it wanted more but from about 3500 up to that it pushed harder and harder. It was actually a custom grind and with the computer tune it still passed smog. Sounded mean as hell even through stock exhaust and cat lots of lope. All still getting about 14mpg city.
Still have yet to even drive the car with it on the 383 with ported heads.

Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

thanks....i was hoping someone would chime in with a monster cam on their STOCK internals car. I had thought about going with the GM 847 cam with 1.7rr's but i am worried about PTVC. Could anyone tell me if this would work or not??

Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

I know that SAR2k was on stock internals witn a 242/249(I think) cam. He had ported heads but it was a stock internals motor. Made 450 rwhp in race trim and converter locked. I also know that Telly from futral motorsports make around 440 rwhp with stock bottome end and ported heads in a 6 speed. I think the cam was alittle smaller than Steves(SAR2K). Both of these cams are big..and I would bet they are about the limit of a hyd roller on a stock bottome end. I know steve took his to 6800.

Just to clear things up Steve's cam is 242/252 .594/.612 on a 108 LSA ported LT1 factory castings with 1.94/1.50 valves. He made a best dyno pull of 450hp/400tq. This man knows his $hit and i have alot of trust in him.

I'm running the XE236/242, .555/.576 on the stock heads and bottom end, and am pretty happy with the results. There's a sound clip in my profile if you're interested in hearing the lope.

Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

sounds good ramair....but i am looking for something a little bit bigger than that...well quite a bit bigger actually....like the 236/242 .608/.613 on a 112LSA or the 242/252 .594/.612 on the 108LSA. These are the type of cams i am looking for MONSTERS anymore options on these cams would be great....

Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

A few things to think about....

What gears are you running? No Stall issues with you here but the bigger the cam the bigger the stall for it to work properly.

Why does a BIG cam have to be what you want? Big isin't always fast.

The DCR and compression you can get with a stock motor is your biggest barrier.

Match that too the fact that if you go too big on a stock bottom end you can have piston to valve issues.... That's one of the problems you run into with too much duration and too little LSA.

I know about PTVC issues....but this cam above was with stock internals and look at the power it made....and i am looking for something in the middle probably a 110LSA.....as i do want to spray the motor also....

No, it's in a 383. He wants a sound clip of a big cam (based mostly on his other thread) and I offered one - I keep forgetting he wants one for stock displacement.

You gotta realize how high Steve twists these things..... The 370 he had was going 7800rpm or more.

He also has lots of compression in there too. Even on stock cubes....

The DCR on a stock motor will suck if you go that big.

A 252 duration cam on a 110LSA is around 6.5:1 DCR on a stock motor
A 242 on a 108 LSA is around 7:1 DCR on a stock motor
a 236 on a 110 LSA is a tad higher....

You need to see around a whole point DCR more on a stock motor for what you are trying to do, you just can't get there from here with what would be acceptable for you on a cam swap. Head gaskets, milling heads etc...

The LSA should have very little to do with the N2O IMHO. Some guys go crazy with LSA on N2O motors and they suck wind when they are NA, and when we get talking about the durations you think you want to run that thing is going to be a pig.

Re: Biggest Cam on stock Cubes?

gotcha...i was under the impression that STeves cam was in a stock DIsplacement motor...... I do see what you mean about the different things. So do you think the GM 847 with the 112LSa would be my best choice for a goo na cam as well as spray cam?
