big cam?

just found out the specs on my cam....

234* INT/234* EXT....110 LSA

i know it's going to be lumpy with that 110 LSA, but how's this compare with some of the other LT1 cams?

Re: big cam?

For one thing, most off-the-shelf LT1 cams have a wider LSA, like 112*. But 110-114 is common.

And most LT1 cams are split-duration, opening the exhaust valves longer than the intakes.

As an example, both me and chrism400 are running the Comp XE 503 cam, which is somewhat popular. It has a duration of 224* on the intake side, and 230* exhaust, with a LSA of 112*; and it's generally considered to be a "mild" cam (especially in a 383).

Re: big cam?

here's the story... I blew my motor and bought a forged shortblock from a guy and the cam was already in it. It's a Cam Motion custom grind matched to a set of heads very similar to the ones i'll be buying here soon. He had forgoten what the specs were, so i had to contact Cam Motion and look it up. I might add, they have great customer service.

Re: big cam?

that is something you're going to need a sound clip from, the idle is going to be very lopey. I have been looking at cams and been trying to decide between the CC305 and the 503, the 503 seems like it would sound better but I need to consider emissions testing.

Re: big cam?

I haven't gotten my new motor yet, but the cam in it is specced at 234/250 114.

The CC503 is a great cam, but like all the XE cams it has a reputation for being hard on the valvetrain due to the fast ramp rates of the cam lobes. You need to use good stuff for the rest of the valvetrain to avoid problems. As an example, along with the CC503, I'm running Comp Pro Magnum lifters, Comp chromemoly pushrods, Crane Gold RRs and the popular Comp 918 beehive springs.

I have to pass a sniffer test every 2 years, but I haven't needed to with this combo yet... I'll know how it does in about 8 months.

Re: big cam?

I had a 240/240 in my 396 LT1, but it didn't even lope as hard as my Corvette.

What kinda motor is this going into?

Re: big cam?

forged 355.....

...the last setup this motor was being built for was supposed to be a completely stock appearing car and on motor is should have gotten into the low 11's on motor and with a small shot high-mid 10's.

I'm tweaking the setup a bit, buti'm shooting for high 11's on motor.

You should be good with emissions. I passed 2 of the 3 tests with a hollow cat! You need a cat to pass the NOX test. I didn't have any egr stuff on mine either so that may have been part of the NOX failure.

I run a Joe O. cam that's a little smaller than that in my 383 and I run 11.50s N/A...My int duration is a little smaller, but the exh is the same and its on a 111LSA...What is the lift of yours?
