A better Opti Spark?

I was checking out one of the threads were a lot of you were looking for a better after market Opti spark. I saw that you were talking to MSD about making one. What about this one from Dynotech? Has any one tried one and are they a good way to go for the price?($600) I had 2 stock opti sparks fail in 2 weeks on my race only 383 LT1.

Thanks, Rick

Are you sure your dowel pin is not too long? Is it a new cam?

lol...lack of replies = ppl are tired of the Opti debate. Dynatech's prices are too high, I don't care that they are making them by hand vs someone like MSD who can go full production line making something similar. Dyna's opti still uses the same Mitsubishi eye sensor and high speed GM bearing so it's really just boiling down to fancy very well sealed housing and I don't see $600 worth for it. They are great but not worth the price IMO. I don't mind (1) $150 opti every 97,000 miles.

$150 OPTI EVERY 97,000 MILES. Give me a break. Try racing your car and reving 0ver 7 grand and see how long your opti lasts. We are all looking for an alternative for the opti.

Try to get in contact with Jordan Musser. He's been running one of the Dynosparks and has been very pleased with it last I heard and well all know how much abuse Jordan's cars take.

I'd say you were installing it incorrectly. Optisparks don't die that quick w/o a reason.

$150??? where did you get your opti from? its about time i replace mine (been bad for about 12,000 miles LOL) well, the car is officially mine as of like 2 days from now (it was dads, he is buying an SUV and the car has a lot of problems and with 162,000 miles on original motor and tranny, what do you expect? and would only be able to break even so he's letting me have it in return that i fix it)

ahh, nevermind, just did a search and autozone, its amazing what the search feature can yield you

I don't really think its a matter of install. I think its more the conditions in which the car is used. Mine will sit long peroids of time and then a race weekend will come along - used very hard. Even though its a vented opti I don't know what good the "venting" does for you when the "vaccum" isn't working. I'm not replacing mine becuase they are failing, I am replacing mine becuase in one or two cases they have been on thier way out the door/just acting up. Becuase of that, I replace them yearly. Don't want to cut a weekend short becuase of a distro.

My post was in reply to his inquiry about Dynatech's product which is still prone to the same problems at high rpm's. It is a better sealed product, that's it, no less no more. Everyone knows there needs to be a better solution, nothing new there.

They say theirs gets rid of the high end miss common to the stock ones and they rivet the rotor on instead of screws. They don't like to see them over 6800rpms because of the rotor flying apart.

I know on the dyno I have chased that unexplained high end miss just as it comes through 6000 and never got rid of it compleatly. It's not there all the time and I am hoping this will get rid of it.

2 weeks ago when the first Opti quit I just changed with my spare and kept racing. I checked it yesterday and the rotor had fell off with no damage. The 2 screws backed out and were just laying there inside the cap. The second Opti exploded the rotor when I spun and hit the revlimeter at 7000. In 5 years of racing this car I have never had a rotor break.

I don't know if it will be any better but I need to try somthing. It almost kept me out of a $10.000 to win race 2 weeks ago that I ended up taking 3rd place. I did lose out on last week on the very first time trial after traveling 2 1/2 hours one way to get there.

Take care, Rick

hmm...could Thread Locking Compound resolve this with the rotor bolts vibrating out? On the phone with Phil @ Dynatech he stated straight up his OPTI was also NOT designed for higher than stock capacity rpms. In fact they are not warrantied for race application at all.

I love my Dynatech Opti. I've had mine installed since I rebuilt the top end in February.

Most everthing today is not warr. for racing. If he is still using the GM parts the should hold up as good if not better with the ballancing and blue printing of the unit.

When I checked the screws they looked to have some locking compound on the threads already.

I talked to a freind that owns a race shop and he said even the best MSD has the same problem with the rotor coming off. He has tried everthing to stop it with no luck. Now he takes his cap off and checks it every race and also advises his customers to do the same.

You guys must abuse the hell out of your cars. Mine is stock opti with 85k on it with no signs of it going. And i have a hard foot. I think you all are just retarted and not installing them correctly
