Instead of using a jack to support the subframe and transmission, I'd recomend using furniture dolly's since it'll make it easier to move the assembly around.

Here's some pictures of the setup I used instead of 2 jacks.

+1 for out the bottom, you should be able to find a few write-ups on it.

I know a lot of people say out the bottom, but I will add that doing it out the top isn't hard either once you have stuff out of the way, it's maybe like an hour extra of work and you won't need to have the car so high up in the air.

Then, bottom it would be. You can completely assemble the engine that way.

Bottom sounds crazy but it's very easy to do!

Everyone says taking it out the bottom is easy, but I couldn’t figure out how I was going to get the front of the car that high in my garage.

Here’s a link to taking it out the top that I found and followed.

Whenever I take a engine out of a car I always take the engine and tranny out together.
The key to making it work was the Happy Hooker from TPIS.com that attached to the top of the manifold.

I had to rent another engine hoist since the one I own didn’t have a long enough arm to reach the engine. Once I got everything disconnected, it came right out the top no problems.

If you have an engine lift you can pick up the front of the car and put it on jackstands.

You can use an engine hoist to lift the body off of the engine cradle.

No clean clothes until the cars complete. That'll either motivate you or keep people away from you.

Actually that doesn't look that bad. I didn't think about putting the back of the car on blocks.

I have done the engine removal both way and by far out the bottom is the easiest way to do it. IF you have access to a lift it is even easier. Like shoebox said earlier through the bottom and the motor can be assembled all the way where as pulling it out from the top you will have to pull all the acessories of the front of the engine and pull the intake, hook your chain as short as possible and work the engine up and hoist back slowly until you can finaly clear the wiper cowl. Not to mention the engine is almost standing on in.

Bottom is the easiest but I would recommend a dolly so you can move the engine around once out. Its a lot easier that way.
